Anyone know where Canadian cheddar went?

Don’t you just hate it when you love a product and then it disappears?

My stepmom used to make THE best cheese sauce and said her secret weapon was Canadian cheddar so I became a convert. It used to be in all the supermarkets (UK) and then it was only Morrisons but now it’s nowhere to be found and has been like that for a few years.

Does anyone know where to find Canadian Cheddar in the UK or why it disappeared from the shops.?

Clearly no one does

It's saying product not found but that's how much it was!

Probably with the Cheshire cheese and Shropshire blue from Sainsburys🤔

heldinadream · 07/12/2023 20:51

Truuuuuly not trying to shoehorn, but could it be Brexit, in that pre-Brexit Canada would have had a trade agreement with the EU which we would have been a part of, but now we are excluded from it?
This is only a guess.

Is Cheddar is a protected characteristic like Champagne or Eccles cakes Cornish Pasty etc. . So the cheese would have to be made in Cheddar to be called Cheddar. Could be wrong but it makes sense to me. Maybe they ship Canadian milk to cheddar but carbon footprint would be terrible.

HousedInMySoul · 07/12/2023 20:59

I'd forgotten about Canadian cheddar. When did it go?

HardcoreLadyType · 07/12/2023 21:02

Canadian cheddar was lovely - so cheesy!

I usually buy Waitrose cheddar now. The number 6 strength, I think it is. It’s also very good. Strong flavour but not too sharp.

GrumpyPanda · 07/12/2023 21:06

God I wish I could get the stuff over here in Europe. Used to buy it all the time living in California. The sharp, artisan version. Soooooo good.

No, hardly any cheddar is made in Cheddar. The ship had already long sailed with that one. I think there is West Country Farmhouse Cheddar or something similarly specific (?) which is protected, but nobody cares unfortunately and any old cheese can be called cheddar even if it's nothing like cheddar at all.

West Country Farmhouse Cheddar has protected designation of origin. Any other cheddar made anywhere else can also be called cheddar.

LakeTiticaca · 07/12/2023 21:10

Not seen it for years, or Irish cheddar which was very good

Agree, I think cheddar is a protected brand.

Maybe Canadian cheese is still around but called something else.

Or try real cheddar instead.

It’s correct that it is due to trade deals, or there lack of, as a result of Brexit unfortunately.

ehb102 · 07/12/2023 21:36

I've been able to get a Canadian cheddar from Tesco Finest in the last year. However I think the closest to what I used to buy (Canadian cheddar from Tesco) is Cathedral City Vintage.

Really? I'm just watching Cameron on TV being statesmanlike with Anthony Blinken, but all I can think is - Why did you do it David, you arse?
Still bloody angry about it.
And now cheese.

whatapity · 07/12/2023 23:26

I used to get it from Sainsbury's, but that was a long time ago. Haven't seen any recently.

Could you post your source for this please?

I forgot about Canadian cheddar! Sainsbury's did a really delicious one.

squishee · 08/12/2023 00:02

Hopefully to Canada.

Ha, my local (Australian) supermarket didn't get that memo. It is chock full of cheddar, as are supermarkets the world over.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/12/2023 00:24

I don't think I've seen Canadian cheddar for donkeys years, not sure if this one is down to brexit. It may be that during the EU years we were getting more cheeses from Europe, but also British cheeses have got so much better in the last few decades. Some of the mature cheddars, especially the ones with a bit of crunch, are excellent. It always was a bit coals to Newcastle to be importing cheddar, we really don't need to be transporting it across the Atlantic.

Sure, but not in the UK.

the80sweregreat · 08/12/2023 06:24

I remember this cheese and it was delicious , nutty and smooth.
I don't mind Cathedral city strong, but it's not the same.
