I drink every single Friday night...

And occasionally drink again on a Saturday lunchtime with food. 15 units on a Friday night (bottle and a half of wine) and then I'll sometimes finish the other half on a Saturday lunchtime (sometimes I can't be bothered and throw it away). So 20 units per week. Throughout the rest of the week I don't drink or even think about it. It's a routine I've stuck to for years and I'll be honest I really bloody enjoy it and start to look forward to it when I'm at work on a Friday afternoon after a long week.

Is this common?! I'm 40. No driving or childcare involved.

It's almost always on my own but not because I'm depressed or anything I just genuinely love my own company and can't be bothered making conversation with people when I'd rather just listen to music by myself. Sometimes I'm pretty pissed and sometimes I'm not, depends what I've eaten I suppose...

The whole drinking alone thing doesn't bother me whatsoever. I shop alone, travel alone, eat out alone, visit museums alone.

People bore me.

Why not life's short 🤷🏻‍♀️ if your not drinking in the week I'd say that's fine. Life's hard, works hard why not enjoy a drink to finish the week off.

Plenty of people on here are of the mindset that you must only drink a small sherry at Christmas or you’re a raging alcoholic.

Not remotely true. That's just an 'attack is the best form of defence' line that people like to trot out to ridicule moderate drinking and thereby defend less moderate drinking. Btw I say that as someone who can sink a bottle of wine with no problem, and did so last night. I've never seen anyone on MN suggest that a couple of drinks a couple of times a week are a problem. People usually refer to the recommended weekly safe limit.

@BullysSpecialPrize123 I do all of those things as well (I actually like people a lot but don't rely on them to do things I want to do).

My caution against drinking too much alone - and this is from someone who will happily have a solo pint in the pub - is it can be harder to keep your drinking in check if you are always drinking alone. It can become a dangerous little habit if you are not careful.

Drinking every Friday & Saturday night, not a big deal in itself.

Drinking that amount in one go, not great really.

It's not just about how much you drink over the week but how much in one go. A bottle and a half in one sitting is much worse for your body/liver than the same amount as a glass every night.

Why do you drink so much? Could you try to cut down to a bottle max?

MammaTo · 02/12/2023 10:48

I don’t think it sounds bad at all.

I adore this....

Same OP same

A bottle and a half in one evening is a lot.

Having a drink each week isn’t too bad, but the quantity is.

TheDuchessOfMN · 02/12/2023 10:58

A bottle and a half in one sitting is a lot. I can polish off a bottle to myself but generally don’t and would be on the floor after any more.

I don’t think it’s that bad though if you’re alcohol free every other night of the week. And yes of course it’s very common.

Why don’t you set yourself a challenge if you’re concerned that it’s too much, maybe not opening a second bottle?

Yes, this. The whole ‘oh MNers only have a thimbleful of sherry at Christmas’ bollocks gets trotted out here all the time. It’s not new, and it’s not true. There probably are a few puritanical people on MN- it’s a huge forum with all sorts of people on it- but what I generally see is sound advice in accordance with recommended levels. A great many of those who advise caution with drinking are those same people who have had problems with their own drinking at some point which has caused issues with their health/work/relationships. They speak from experience which they’re keen to share to help others avoid the same difficulties they’ve had themselves.

Luckynumbereight · 02/12/2023 12:08

The Friday night drinking is a bit on the high side but you have enough recovery time in between for it not to matter.

Enjoy, OP!

Actually. It is true. I see a lot of posts declaring people alcoholics for getting drunk, or drinking heavily on a weekend with friends. There is absolutely a puritanical approach to alcohol on here a lot of the time. With many people who drink very little, never drink at home unless it’s Xmas and often will max have one or two drinks on the very rare occasion they socialise. People declaring they’d be dead or in hospital if they drink 6 drinks.
