My 8 year old loves monopoly. Scattergories. Harry Potter Chess. Snakes and ladders is still a firm fave

we play a few card games too. Sushi go, taco cat goat cheese pizza, pairs, old maid etc.

Junior Scotland Yard is a winner in this house.
Monopoly
Trivial pursuit family edition.

Not technically board games but my DS loves Guess Who, Top Trumps (dogs, dinosaurs, Transformers etc) and very recently original Exploding Kittens. Chess is a big hit (and he's really good at it) and the odd game of Scrabble too

Labyrinth, Harry Potter Cluedo (we like it more than the original) battleships game of life are all favourites here.

Labyrinth!

Labyrinth is popular with mine, and Scotland Yard and Cluedo - but I see they’ve already got a mention!
Also Downfall, though that’s just 2 players. Payday is a favourite too.

My family is very big on board games - what does your son have so far and what sort of things does he like? Fun party games or ones where he has to plan out a strategy? Ticket to Ride is considered a good one for family to play together and involves a bit of strategy. Get the Europe version though because the American one involves more getting blocked from what you want to do. I think Dixit is good; it involves having 7 cards with unusual pictures (by a French artist) on them and then you have to say a word or phrase your picture reminds you of like "time slipping away", "hope" or "fear of the dark" and then others have to submit one of their 7 cards that best matches the phrase and then people vote on which card matches the phrase best. Camel Up is also good, involves betting on camels racing round a track but they don't always behave as you think they will!
