Do you tip your hairdresser if the rate is already high?

I'm trying a new hairdresser and am going to be charged £45 for a wet cut. At my old place (moved house) they charged £30 and I gave a £5 tip and wine at Christmas. But I really don't want to pay more on top of £45 (still happy to do Christmas wine if I end up going back though!) Is this really mean of me? I wasn't going to get it cut at all but it really needs it so I can't put it off any longer.

No, I think all this tipping is confusing and awkward. That's the price, no need to tip!

MarleyandMarleyWoo · 30/11/2023 18:52

I don’t tip hairdressers. I find it a bit strange that people do these days tbh, they are skilled at what they do and are, presumably, charging accordingly.

MargaritaThyme · 30/11/2023 18:54

No, I don’t tip hairdressers.

No I don’t. When I went to a lady who was both good and a bargain (£28!) I did but now I am paying £40 for a wet cut I don’t. I did give a big box of chocs this week though for Christmas.

lovinglyit · 30/11/2023 18:56

I don't tip hairdressers. They set they're price and I pay it. Just like I do at the dentist or a holiday - I don't feel the need to tip them either.

EwwSprouts · 30/11/2023 18:57

No. She owns the business.

KnottyKnitting · 30/11/2023 18:57

Not any more- my cut and blow dry( takes about 45 mins as hair fairly short) is now £66!

I have tried other cheaper hairdressers but they just don't do it the same as my hairdresser who has been doing my hair for years.

HelenaCh9 · 30/11/2023 18:57

No but I tip the teen apprentice who washes the colour off. Just a couple of quid.

The hairdresser is 25+ years qualified and owns the salon, I would not tip him.

Lifeinlists · 30/11/2023 18:58

No, it's pricey enough already.

tomatoontoast · 30/11/2023 18:58

I don't tip anyone.

Sundaefraise · 30/11/2023 18:59

£45 for a wet cut?! Bloody hell, they would have to be superb to justify that.

truetruebarneymcgrew · 30/11/2023 18:59

Not anymore. They charged half the price for dh hair cut, compared to mine....I was in the seat for half the time as had a 'dry trim' with no products just water spray at the hair ends, and trim, no styling. Dh had more styling, his cost £15, mine cost £40. Dh paid and was really shocked at the cost of my cut, I told him it's why I only go every few years!

Comedycook · 30/11/2023 19:00

My last trim cost £49. I didn't tip even though I like her and she does a good job. I pay on card though so I actually don't have any cash to tip...

Sorry should say £30 not £40

I agree. I round up to £20 at Christmas, that's it

BrandNewBicep · 30/11/2023 19:02

No, my hairdresser is self employed. I do give her a bottle of something at Xmas. If she was an employee, I would tip.

Notmetoo · 30/11/2023 19:04

I don't tip but I do give something at Christmas

Flamingbow · 30/11/2023 19:05

Nope, I always go to the same hairdresser but they charge a fair amount as it is, they own the salon though so not like they're renting a chair (even if they are don't feel obliged). I do get her some chocolates or something for my December app though!

darkmorningslighydays · 30/11/2023 19:06

No, it's expensive enough.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/11/2023 19:06

I've known my hairdresser for 15 years,I don't tip every cut but I put £30 in a Xmas card for her.

Livida · 30/11/2023 19:07

Thanks this makes me feel better. It was actually making me feel a bit anxious about going - I hate the weird bit at the end where I tip anyway so I'll just feel awkward about not doing it instead. The price is bloody extortionate!

balmysummerevening · 30/11/2023 19:07

Nope. I pay around £60 for my hair stylist and he’s the “style director” in the salon. At that price I feel he’s more than compensated for an hours work.

Precipice · 30/11/2023 19:07

Not mean at all. I've never tipped my barber, just like I don't tip at the cobblers or the dry cleaners or other services. I presume prices have been set to allow for a profit and it's not my responsibility to pay extra for no reason.

Coconutter24 · 30/11/2023 19:08

Years ago I would say keep the change, I then changed hairdressers to a lady who owned a salon and would always refuse a tip. I then moved away and found a new hairdresser but costs these are quite high for a wet cut so I just pay the price of the cut. They use an online booking system and you can pay online which takes the awkwardness out of do I don’t I tip when it’s time to leave

EmpressSoleil · 30/11/2023 19:12

I went to a local hairdressers a while back. He put my coat in the cupboard where the others staffs handbags were, all designer. The guy himself was the owner and spent the whole time telling me about various holidays he'd taken that year. So no I didn't tip. I'm a public sector worker and I get treated pretty shoddily by both my employer and the public, for a not fantastic wage. I get zero perks. I'm not paying £100+ for my hair and tipping on top. Funnily enough that guy was clearly expecting a tip as he was all smiles until I paid just the bill. At that point he turned his back on me and ignored me. I didn't go back there again.
