Do you tip your hairdresser if the rate is already high?

I'm trying a new hairdresser and am going to be charged £45 for a wet cut. At my old place (moved house) they charged £30 and I gave a £5 tip and wine at Christmas. But I really don't want to pay more on top of £45 (still happy to do Christmas wine if I end up going back though!) Is this really mean of me? I wasn't going to get it cut at all but it really needs it so I can't put it off any longer.

I ALWAYS tip my hairdresser, I always have. Around 15% Same as I always tip waitresses and cab drivers.

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 30/11/2023 19:14

I tip the girl who puts the colour on and washes my hair 5 pounds, she is only 19. I don't tip the hairdresser who owns the salon. The cost of colour cut and blow dry is already over £100.

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/11/2023 19:17

I don't. I give a pound or two to the apprentice who washes my hair. But the cost of my haircut (which takes an hour start to finish including washing and blow dry) is a lot more than I earn per hour. I know that hairdressers have other costs but I doubt many in London are earning less than £32k per year which is what I earn. My hair cut is usually around the £60 mark.

I pay just shy of £50 every 10 weeks. Only tip at Christmas about £10. I love my hairdresser though and have had previous ones that I haven't tipped.

Willow12345 · 30/11/2023 19:22

I tip my hairdressers. I spend hours there (lots of hair..) and after my last 3 hour appt, I gave £20.

SallyWD · 30/11/2023 19:33

Mine charges £60 and I tip £5. Less than 10% but I still think it's a decent tip.

I don't tip anyone.

Me neither. They are being paid to do the job, why do they need to be tipped? (unless you are living in the US of course).

friendsfiend · 30/11/2023 19:48

I always tip a tenner which is about 8%. I don't know if everyone does but she always seems really pleased. I guess I thought we all tipped hairdressers.

She doesn't own the salon and I followed her to this one.

SgtBilko · 30/11/2023 19:49

I’ve stopped tipping my hairdresser.

tomatoontoast · 30/11/2023 18:58

I don't tip anyone.

I went for a meal recently with a new friend and he announced he doesn't ever tip. I won't lie, it's changed my view of him.

I left enough for us both and made it very obvious I had.

Biscottiforever · 30/11/2023 19:52

I tip about a fiver. Haircut and colour is between £55 and £60 depending on who I get. I never used to tip but dmil who used to work in a hairdressers paid for me to have my hair done a few times when I was on maternity leave and she always gave me tip money so when I could afford to get my hair done again I carried on.

CatMandarin · 30/11/2023 19:53

I pay £25 and give £5 tip

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 30/11/2023 19:59

I always feel awkward too. Had a frank discussion with the salon owner once and she said she really doesn't mind if people don't tip as she knows it's expensive already, but the junior who washed the hair would appreciate £1
It only needs to be £1 as she does a lot over the course of thr day.

SurelySmartie · 30/11/2023 20:00

I do £5. I feel like I don’t get as good treatment otherwise. Like it’s more rushed and just not as much attention to detail. I don’t know if I imagine that though. Just a feeling.

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/11/2023 20:03

I always tip in a restaurant. That's completely different.

Roastpotatoesat3 · 30/11/2023 20:04

No, they are so expensive now. I feel they are well enough paid. I don’t actually tip anyone anymore! I don’t go to restaurants anymore either but if I did I’d probably ask them to take it off. IMO you don’t get good enough service anywhere to warrant a tip these days!
Unless I was enthralled by great service it’s a no from me.

the80sweregreat · 30/11/2023 20:05

I used to always tip , but the prices seem to rise every time I go along and it's just too much to add on an already hefty bill for a cut and blow dry when I'm in and out in half hour.
I might buy her some chocs for Christmas or something, but I admit I've given up on the tips.
I know that sounds mean.

Wendyspotatopeeler · 30/11/2023 20:05

No, I dont tip. I love my hairdresser, she's ace. She charges a price and I pay her. I've been going every 3 weeks for the last 10 years. I might get her a token gift at Xmas.

usernother · 30/11/2023 20:14

Yes, always. Cut and blow dry is £50 and I tip £5.

TheCompactPussycat · 30/11/2023 20:18

I give my hairdresser an extra fiver at Christmas (and certainly will this year as my appointment is on the 23rd) but otherwise I just pay the price charged.

Gophergoesham · 30/11/2023 20:18

I always tip £10 on £120 cut/colour and tip £20 at Christmas.

Maireas · 30/11/2023 20:20

No. I pay £70 for a cut. That's enough.

Zanatdy · 30/11/2023 20:20

I usually tip hairdressers but the one I started going to 3yrs ago doesn’t allow you to add a tip to the card payment and I never remember cash. Plus it’s pretty expensive so I don’t feel bad not tipping. Like you OP my old hairdresser was cheaper, but it was all a bit chaotic with mates always popping in for tea, they were always hung over and in covid they didn’t follow rules so I changed

Gall10 · 30/11/2023 20:21

If a hairdresser could cut my hair in a style that I could replicate at home…I’d tip them every penny I own. My hair always looks good when I leave the salon but after the first wash it’s back to a mess!
How on earth am I supposed to blow dry behind my back, arms in the air, looking in a mirror while holding a hairdryer?
Answers on a post card please.

Helluvawomen · 30/11/2023 20:23

No I pay £83 every six weeks in Manchester and I already dread when it’s time as I can I’ll afford it but I hate greys more.
