Do you tip your hairdresser if the rate is already high?

I'm trying a new hairdresser and am going to be charged £45 for a wet cut. At my old place (moved house) they charged £30 and I gave a £5 tip and wine at Christmas. But I really don't want to pay more on top of £45 (still happy to do Christmas wine if I end up going back though!) Is this really mean of me? I wasn't going to get it cut at all but it really needs it so I can't put it off any longer.

It is definitely a skill set I've never mastered
I admire people who cut their own and I've never really got the hang of hairdryers, straightening tongs or dying it myself
Dh cut it for me over lockdown and did a great job , but it was nice going back to the pros for a more finished look that is completely ruined after one wash. At least it looks ok for a few days

I tip the junior who washes my hair. No one else.

JaniceJanice · 30/11/2023 21:11

No I don’t tip my hair dresser… I always tip my nail lady between £5-£10 though.

Why?

mynewusername2023 · 30/11/2023 21:38

I never tip my hairdresser. In fact, I only tip in restaurants if the service has been good and normally round up a taxi journey but that's it.

etmoiandme · 30/11/2023 21:38

I do if it's someone I'd be keen to use again.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 30/11/2023 21:42

I had my hair cut and root colour done yesterday and it cost £110. I tipped £10. I usually tip every other time I go.

Maireas · 30/11/2023 21:37

Why?

I’m really fussy about my nails and make extra work for her, I’m much less bother to my hairdresser!

Im confident I could get an equally good hair cut elsewhere but my nail tech is amazing.

Oh I see.

Not anymore. They charged half the price for dh hair cut, compared to mine....I was in the seat for half the time as had a 'dry trim' with no products just water spray at the hair ends, and trim, no styling. Dh had more styling, his cost £15, mine cost £40. Dh paid and was really shocked at the cost of my cut, I told him it's why I only go every few years!

I can never understand this either.
My hair is straight - why does a dry cut cost so much?
I'm shocked how much people pay pn this thread!
I often tip because I feel awkward - esp if I want to go back! But may stop now after so many people saying they don't.

Livida · 30/11/2023 22:12

Mine is just a wet cut: less than an inch off the ends, some framing round the face and one layer

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 30/11/2023 22:17

Never. It's quite a large bill for a cut and colour so I'm not paying more on top.

FussyPud · 30/11/2023 22:19

I have started going to the local training salon, wash/cut/blow dry is between £8-£13. There’s no option to tip. I’m going to take chocolates in for my next appointment as it’s near Christmas.

Hereforthedramaz · 30/11/2023 22:22

My cut and half head of highlights are £190 and I don't tip.

I expect the salon owner to charge an appropriate fee for him and his staff.

Tbh even if it was cheap I find tipping things like hairdressers really awkward and patronising

Lizzieregina · 30/11/2023 22:27

Unfortunately I live in the land of tip for every damn thing, so yes, it’s expected. 20% of cost of service.

fourplusfour · 30/11/2023 22:28

I don't even tip the assistant anymore. She's on £10 an hour as a 16 yr old student not much less than me on minimum wage.

43ontherocksporfavor · 30/11/2023 22:30

Not anymore. It’s £100!!! I’m in their 2 hours, that’s a fab hourly rate.

Snowballs138 · 30/11/2023 22:31

My roots and trim were £85 the other day. I gave her £90 and felt such guilt taking the fiver change! I wasn't sure if I was meant to tip or not. Felt awkward! Maybe she'll cut my hair crap next time in revenge 😂

Bookist · 30/11/2023 22:39

Nope. I pay £70 and always have the owner of the salon cut my hair. He has a second home in the South of France so I doubt he needs tips.

Comedycook · 30/11/2023 22:39

Fewer people carry cash nowadays...most people pay on card surely so less likely to be able to tip anyway

moonlitwalks · 30/11/2023 22:45

No I don’t tip. As others have said, I pay £75 for a cut and blow dry every 6 weeks. Thats more than enough. I also think it’s a bit patronising to tip highly skilled, expensive stylists. Eg you wouldn’t tip Trevor Sorbie for example, as you’ve already paid handsomely for his expertise.

OldKingCole · 30/11/2023 22:45

I always tip a tenner as well - I thought everyone did! But I’m in Ireland - I think tipping is more usual here than the UK.

user701 · 30/11/2023 22:52

I never tip other than in restaurants. I don’t know anyone who tips a hairdresser

BlueGrey1 · 30/11/2023 22:57

No, I don’t tip the hairdressers, they are paid well enough
I don’t tip the plumber, electrician, boiler repair man, etc etc etc so why should they get tips, they are paid for the job they do.

Tipping should be a thing of the past

Drhow · 30/11/2023 22:59

Nope and I’m not even sure if it’s an option because they charge my card automatically as I leave. I could give them extra cash on the side I guess but I never carry cash,
