Child benefit

After someone with child benefit knowledge!

I earn well under 50,000 but my partner just got a new job and now earns well over.

I'm confused as to whether we need to stop receiving it, I thought we did but some online wording says I can still claim.

can anyone give me a clear answer?

thanks

You can still claim, but your DH will need to do a tax return each year and pay back the money. All of it if he earns about £60k, a proportion of it if between £50-60k.

You can claim it but your partner will have to pay it back.

You can keep your claim open to get national insurance contributions in your name and opt not to receive the money, which is the other option.

Bear in mind that you won't lose all child benefit until the higher salary is above £60k after pension costs (as long as you don't have other benefits like a company car or medical insurance) and paying it back is a simple admin job so worth claiming unless you won't get anything at all - you can usually pay it back by PAYE.

If he's just got the higher paying job, you won't fully be affected until the next tax year as it's amount earned during the whole tax year that counts.

However, if you are working you don't need to worry about NI contributions so if you'll have to pay it all back, you can opt to not receive it in the first place.

Thanks everyone… I think we’ll just opt out as our tax situation is difficult enough!

I also used to recieve child benefit every four weeks on Saturdays over 5 years, but have not recieved yet! Online payment shows due date 3th of June! Just was worried that they may have stopped it!
