If you hated the ‘beloved’ DREAMLAND ALASKAN FAUX FUR HEATED THROW…

Argh, I could kick myself. I feel like I am the little boy in the Emperor's New Clothes story.

I bought the highly recommended (bloody) Alaskan throw on Black Friday thinking that this was the answer to my ‘no boiler situation’.

It gets rave reviews online and here, so I feel like I’m going a little insane. It arrived yesterday, and it is really horrible. The fake fur top layer is a nasty cheap slightly shedding layer of static shite. The throw is stiff, heavy, not really reversible. Underneath is a weird layer of synthetic flannel described in reviews as a lovely velvety layer.

I am returning it, but in the meantime I am freezing.

Can anyone who hated the Dreamland electric throw recommend a nicer feeling, cosy possibly velvety feeling throw?

I've had a few of the heated throws and they've all been disappointing.
The best things that I've bought to keep warm in the house is my massive Oodie. It's heavy, down to my knees and I'm never chilly while I have it on.
I put it on as soon as I'm home and I think it's better than a throw because I can wander around the house wearing it. When I'm on the sofa it's big and wide enough to tuck my legs in comfortably.
I look ridiculous but it's worth it!

I’ve got a Cheap towelling Seaswim changing robe that doubles up as my work at home outfit (except on video calls 🤣). Covers me head to toe in blanket works a treat and I can walk about in it.

IFeelSoSoSad · 29/11/2023 06:58

Thanks for the suggestion, great minds!. My Oodie has been commandeered by offspring no2, and I am waiting for a new one but there is a backlog and it hasn’t been shipped yet (ordered a month ago!). In the mean time I am having warm foot baths (boiled water in a bowl), and using layers of regular blankets.

Haha, yes it was wasn’t it! I may have overstated my optimism in the throw’s powers!😂

Lakeland’s one

Which one though? I bought this one from Lakeland thinking that the most expensive with the 5star reviews was the Lakeland one.

No idea, we can't have heated anything because we don't have enough plug sockets. What I have discovered though is fleecy lined joggers and a fleece lined knock-off oodie thing. I was standing outside last night wearing those (and a thermal vest and socks) and couldn't feel the cold through them. They're amazingly warm.

TurquoiseHexagonSun · 29/11/2023 07:26

I love my Cosihome heated throw.

piscofrisco · 29/11/2023 07:26

Lakeland headed throw.
Hot water bottle you can wear.

Spirael · 29/11/2023 07:38

I have this one: https://www.lakeland.co.uk/61802/dreamland-velvety-electric-heated-throw-grey-and-red-check-135-x-180cm
The top is velvety and the bottom is fleecy. It is fairly heavy with the heating wires inside, but I kind of enjoy a bit of weight to blankets.
Totally agree with not liking the fake fur blankets!
I've been having the blanket over my knees and this over my shoulders: https://www.marksandspencer.com/teddy-borg-poncho/p/clp60628162?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share
Lovely and toast warm. 😊

I got one of those too and it felt awful - even worse as time went on as the fur got rougher like a cheap teddy bear.
I am now the proud owner of the XL version of this & it’s very soft, both sides - one slightly fluffier but a soft velvet fleece. Look around for different stockists - I just did the link to show the item.

I just bought a cheapie heated blanket from Amazon and it doesn't the trick.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/11/2023 07:41

Anything that synthetic is going to be disappointing heat wise. What you need is a decent wool blanket.

savoycabbage · 29/11/2023 07:42

I've got the dreamland ordinary fleece one and it feels fine. My friend has the husky one and I can't even touch it. It gives me the heeby-jeebys.

blackandwhitephotos · 29/11/2023 07:48

I've got a giant heated oodie (it's got battery packs in the pockets). I look beyond ridiculous in it but after about 20 mins in it, I'm boiling!

Wasn't expensive, about £30 from Amazon.

Yes, but which one? There are lots on the Lakeland website.

Sorry-we have the one @Spirael linked below

Evenstar · 29/11/2023 16:48

I bought this one, quite a velvety texture

Koalatreats · 29/11/2023 16:49

I love my husky one. I’ve barely had the heating on working from home (I do put it on for the children). I think it paid for itself in a month!

I have the peacock one too which is nice but I don’t think it’s a a warm. The husky one is enough on its own some days.

SixPastTheHour · 29/11/2023 16:54

The argos £50 ones are soft - or at least, mine is. I expect companies have jumped on the heated throw COL bandwagon and lowered quality of materials. You can also insure the argos one, as my dreamland one didn't work after its first wash (followed instructions).

Topsy44 · 29/11/2023 17:19

I bought a Silentnight luxury heated throw from Asda at the weekend. It’s got a velvety feel to it, was only £40 and I find it v difficult to move from the sofa now😀.

Itsjustmeee · 29/11/2023 17:23

I have the dreamland Alaskan throw and I love it so no advice on that
but I would recommend a proper oodie from the oddie not the thin type ones

you can get longer oddies now on the website
I bought my dh one and he’s 6ft 3
the other ones made him look ridiculous like some sort of mad escaped chicken with skinny long legs 😂

I have a few of the orginal oddies and they are really warm and toasty

yoshiblue · 29/11/2023 17:26

I second the herringbone
Velvet one, it's lovely.
