Where to start watching Dr Who

So we watched it religiously from the start of the reincarnation with Christopher eccleston and watched through until the beginning of Jodie Whitaker. Life meant we stopped watching it after a few episodes. We want to get back into it, and wondering how far back to restart watching it to make the current stuff make sense??

William Hartnell. And watch out for the Zarbi. They scared the fu*k out of me so much that I still recall them - and I'm 66 and watched the very first ever episode "live" - not that there was another way!

Start at the beginning Grin

I'm also 66 and can remember Dr Who was the highlight of the week.

Christopher Ecclestone was the big restart it needed. Him and David Tennant breathed new life into the programme

Not a Tom Baker or Jodie Whitaker fan though.

And very disappointed with 'The Star Beast' last week.

I'd probably just start with C E again although I loved matt Smith and all the River Song stuff it was brilliant. the writers wasted Jodie whitakers stint I lost interest.

I think you are saying you just want to know if you have to go back to where you were and watch from there, or if you can skip some episodes, rather than wanting to go back to previous doctors that you have already seen, am I right?
I stopped watching Jodie's doctor halfway through I think her second series - the episode with Byron and Shelley anyway - not because I don't like her but as you say other things got in the way. I watched the new one with David Tennant and it made perfect sense as far as these things do. I will go back and watch the ones I missed at some point. I think the most recent one would have made less sense if I hadn't seen Donna Noble's episodes though.

@BlazingWorld has it. Just wondering if we need to go back to the beginning of Jodie’s or start more recently. Didn’t feel them for some reason when before absolutely loved the arching story lines

tbh I'd just watch the specials where she regenerated

I haven't watched an episode of Dr Who since it was Sylvester McCoy in the early 90s?!

I wasn't too keen on him so never bothered since.

I thought i might try and watch the whole lot from Tom Baker (my fav) onwards to present day.

BeigeChair · 29/11/2023 18:00

@Laiste the story arcs with rose and river song etc are worth watching from the restart

The ‘current stuff’ as you call it is only one episode so far, and as it started with David Tennant and Catherine Tate recapping and explaining the latest plots to the audience… I don’t think you have to go back at all! It was all fairly self explanatory. (Albeit very rushed).

I just loved all that ❤️

BertieBotts · 29/11/2023 18:19

I always think Dr who is cleverly written that you can jump in wherever and have an enjoyable experience.

I wouldn't worry about catching up unless you want to.

BeigeChair · 29/11/2023 20:47

Thanks both, well just start with where it is now. Do we need to see the previous episode where she regenerwtesnor is she in it still?

OP posts:
BlazingWorld · 30/11/2023 09:30

I think if anything with that previous episode you WOULD need to have seen previous ones whereas when a doctor regenerates it often feels like there is a bit of a reset of any preceding arc - I did actually watch it, but can't remember anything about it and think i was a bit confused having not seen the previous series at all.

Mrsjayy · 30/11/2023 12:03

I missed some watched the last 2 I think just to catch up but tbh it fried my brain so I think you just need to go with it !

Mrsjayy · 30/11/2023 12:07

there was a massive spoiler in 2020 series I'm not sure if you caught it ?

Mrsjayy · 30/11/2023 12:08

not spoiler revelation!

BogRollBOGOF · 30/11/2023 12:16

Probably best watching the DT series with Donna Nobel as the companion.

I didn't feel like I missed out after dropping out halfway through Jodie Whitttakers stint.

SurelySmartie · 30/11/2023 18:23

Jodie’s doctor isn’t in it at all. There is the odd oblique reference. I really don’t think you have to watch any previous episode to enjoy this new one.
Some of it’s a bit naff but it’s worth it for the comedy Donna lines 😆
Sylvia (her mother) is quite funny as well.
