How do I deal with post interview anxiety

I had an interview today for a promotion at work. It’s a step up from what I do now but I have a lot of experience in this role and have been doing aspects of the job for a while.

I was well prepared for the interview but somehow just got myself really lost, a couple of the questions totally threw me and caught me off guard and I had to be prompted several times.

Ive been told I’ll hear tomorrow but I feel so, so disappointed in myself because I know I could do much better. There’s a few vacancies but I was highly encouraged to apply by my manager (not that that’s any guarantee job get the job) and feel so gutted I’ve let myself down.

I’m on the train to meet a friend for a drink now to try and distract my mind but I feel really teary and embarrassed. and vowing never to apply for another job again 😅

Interviews are a law unto themselves so you have my sympathy. I was deeply rusty a few months ago when I started applying, and it took a few tries to get back into the swing of how unnatural they feel and the types of things to revise.

Focus on your bravery for putting yourself out there. If you don’t get the promotion, ask for feedback and tips on how you can nail it next time. Never be embarrassed about going for something important - just regret the things you don’t do. The rest is out of your hands.

Enjoy your drink!

Feel your pain. I too had an interview today but for a completely different organisation. I’m rusty as hell but shouldn’t be as I interview using the STAR format!! But this seemed to completely go out of my head. I had to be prompted quite a few times too.

I came out feeling ok, but since the day has worn on I have convinced myself it’s not mine. If all else fails I shall use this as a training session and certainly ask for feedback. Such a shame as I really wanted this job!

Good luck to you, we are often our own worst critics! X

It’s a horrible feeling but it’s only for tonight. Chances are you are catastrophising but if you don’t get it ask for feedback. Don’t let it put you off applying again. Your manager clearly sees your potential.
Enjoy your drinks and stay distracted.
