Weve been bought an item of homeware from m&s as a gift and tbh, whilst the thought was lovely, but item is really not my scene. Does anyone know if i were to return the item to a store whether or not i could exchange it or get a credit towards an alternative. I don’t have a gift receipt and item was purchased online, but i don’t want to ask the buyer to change it as i don’t want to offend them. Thanks

You used to be able to take an item back and get a credit voucher at the current price without a receipt and hope it hadn't gone down in the sale, I haven't done this for a couple of years though but it is probably worth a try, they can only say no if not.

Check if it is still online and how much it is, hopefully you will get a credit voucher if it's current

Thanks, yes it is a newish item online. However, i was concerned that the-sender of the item might get to know i had exchanged it for a voucher.

I know it didn't use to connect to an account, they just scanned it at the till for the price and the credit voucher looked like paper receipt, some shops do connect every item individually to an account, Next has for years but I'm not sure if M & S has moved in this direction now or not with individual bar coded items that relate to purchasers accounts

I got baby clothes given to me when I had my little girl last month and they were too small (they were newborn and she went straight to 0-3) took them back without gift receipt and they wouldn't do anything. Very few places will exchange or refund without these days as I've learnt the last few months being gifted clothes from different places.

I took something back to marks last month that I was given and didn't like. They were great and refunded it against what I actually wanted

(With no receipt)

Ah,so a mixed bag as to whether i will be able to do anything with the gift. I cant see anywhere online with an exact answer. Will try to exchange on next visit to store. Thx

Definitely worth a try, you could always try and exchange for something general like towels or something like that which would still be house stuff if there isn't anything much you like.
