Christmas eve boxes.
First of December presents (must have lost my mind with that one)
This long winded fisherman/mermaid game we have to play every time we get out the bath.
Letting tiny toddler DS walk in shops.

That was a reply to Watchthedoormat who buys for one child when it is the other child's birthday. Sure I clicked "reply".

“Reply” does nothing, it’s the same as a regular post.

To actually reply to someone you have to choose “quote”. Don’t ask me why.

Last series of Mafs. I watched until the end and genuinely disliked most of them.
Getting fat again after losing weight.
Dh generally.

@Shakeylegs WHAT? You cannot be serious. That is hilariously bonkers, 42 presents?? You better stop at 18 or 21 or some significant number!

Mine is also elf on the bloody shelf.

Occasionally my new career. It's artistic and that makes it incredibly overwhelming sometimes. I feel under constant pressure to produce something as good as I have previously. Sometimes I want to cry because I feel like a fraud.

My old career (which I can no longer do due to disability) was black and white. I could do it half asleep. It was hard but it didn't involve my imagination.

PanettonePuff · 28/11/2023 18:54

Following football aged 12…. I don’t actually go to it anymore, as moved a long way from my home town club - but Omg, come Saturday afternoons, I HAVE to find the results no matter where I am or what I’m doing.

Ye Gods, it’s such a pain! I have “given up, lost my patience, despaired” so many times over the years, but I can’t help it!

I hate the grip it has over me, and the fact that a poor result can still make me glum all evening. In my early 60s now🤷‍♀️ Utterly ridiculous and so annoying.

Horse riding lessons for my four DC. They LOVE them...get so excited. But I could have bought a small island with the money by now and standing in muck while I turn into an ice sculpture is not how I want to spend my Sunday afternoons.

Justcashnosweets · 28/11/2023 18:56

Smoking. Started when I was 17, and I'm now 47. Have stopped a few times, but started again each time. I hate it.

It’s INSANE. Obviously not 42 big presents, but 42 all the same. It genuinely stresses me out, all the tat we get. And the in-laws have multiple kids too, so they do it several times a year. 42 is the lowest number!

I want to stop now but that whole side of the family go present-mad. Christmas too. When I was a kid we got a stocking with maybe three little things in, and one big present. That was it. But we have to get our kids dozens and dozens of presents. I tried to object but am accused of sucking the joy out of Christmas.

Real Christmas trees. Yes, they're gorgeous and they smell amazing and they're natural, but the needles! The watering! The hoovering! DS is 16 now and was heartbroken when I suggested an artificial one this year.

Are you buying non-drop? We only will buy non-drop and last year only had to water it once. Usually though we only would water it once per week. Never had issues with needles other than the few when removing the net.

Read the first Harry Potter aloud to DD - this continued until I had read the entire 7 books - and the bastard last one was around 700 pages long! (I did enjoy it in some ways, but it took over a lot of our joint reading time)

minipie · 28/11/2023 19:21

Have never done most of these except real tree and stockings, now feeling a mix of smug and mean parent. Mine are definitely the sort where if you do it once they expect it every blimming time.

Spent years and years cuddling my DC1 to sleep mind you, that was a millstone. Thankfully no more.

Suspect DC2’s new gymnastics squad and netball league are going to be in the “why did I agree to this” category as they involve complex logistics and horrible traffic.

Trying to sort the Lego back into the original sets so I can sell them.... 😩

Omg I need to do that 🙄🤷

Sharontheodopolodous · 28/11/2023 19:33

Cross stitch
I buy one, make a start on it and by the time I'm halfway through,I'm sick of the bloody sight of it
I unpick more than I sew (or so it seems) and finally the end is in sight
Finally finish it-and start on another
I never learn

Riddlesinthedark · 28/11/2023 19:35

Buying gifts for close family from DC. It started out as a cutesy thing with photo keychains etc but has spiralled from something tiny to receiving actual wishlists for DC to "buy."
No more. This year I'm going to just sign our gifts as from DC.

Yeah I jacked them in and got a pine scented wax melt!

ColleenDonaghy · 28/11/2023 20:00

Let this be a thread to warn all those with little ones not to start the fecking elf. Ours are 5 and 3 and we've held out so far but I suspect the whining from the 5yo will be exhausting this year.

@goingslightlyinsane time for a rota! Everyone gets a week (or whatever). Sweet that they want to keep the tradition but it doesn't need to be all on you.

CateringPanic · 28/11/2023 20:03

@LongLostTeacher lol my mum STILL buys presents for me and my siblings when it is a siblings birthday and we are 33 31 and 25…I think it’s the age gap between the oldest and youngest child - she could never work out the “fair” time to stop. Not £100 worth though, it’s usually about £15-£20

This was on my to do list (been on that list a couple of years actually). Think I might cross it off and not bother.

ascogmeet · 28/11/2023 20:06

We don't really do presents in the family for adults anymore except a few nice treats like wine or chocolates that kind of thing except one aunt and uncle are continually upping the ante buying more and more stuff and more expensive stuff so M&S, Waitrose, Hotel Chocolat that kind of thing, the hamper they gave us last year must have cost more than £50! I don't know if we should just stick to our budget and hope they calm down but then everyone else starts buying more and more expensive stuff! Its so unnecessary and I end up feeling bad about all of it.

Decorating my living room!
First I broke my arm.
Then my mum got poorly and needed my full time care .
Sadly I've just lost my mum.
My house is upside down due to the decorating and I've still to make magic for the kids in a few weeks time 😩
