Refund but lost original card

I need to return something i bought on my debit card but I lost my purse and weekend cancelled my cards and now have a new one. The account/sort code same but the card number is different. Will I be able to get a refund still as I know sometimes they ask for the same card and check the long number on the front, which is different on my new card.

You might want to bring some evidence if you have it like the letter the new card came with, and ID

I assume it depends on their system. Lots of places I've had to re-insert my card to get the refund applied. Others (less frequently) seem to just do some button pushing and declare it done.

Depending on the shop, they may refund in cash but generally I think its unlikely as I can see it being a common scam - buy something on a card, then return the item for cash. Card user could still do a chargeback and there is no evidence of a refund actually received.

Unfortunately it might be a bit "computer says no" - and the system just won't let them refund to any old card (even if its clearly the same bank account etc.)

The likely option is a gift card....but appreciate if its a high value purchase this might not work. Possibly the companies head office may help, so it might be worth a call to their customer service. as they may be limited in store.
