Car been standing undriven for a year - anything I need to look at / do before driving?

I am in the process of sorting out my father's estate and have now come to the car which I had been putting off as we werent sure what to do with it.

We have now resolved to get it running and then sell it. We have done all the transfer of ownership stuff and will tax and insure it shortly. The problem now is that it has been standing on the driveway for over a year. So whats the best way of getting it back on the road?

The battery is completely dead and resistant to charging so we will replace that but is there anything else we need to be concerned about before starting it?

Its a 8 year old VW diesel which webuyanycar tells me they will buy for £6000 in good condition so its potentially worth something but I dont want to impede progress by getting in and potentially breaking something on the way to the MOT!

Any advice?

I'd get it serviced at the same time of MOT .

For starters check all fluids and tyre pressures etc. If it’s been parked with the handbrake on that could well be seized. It’s possible the brakes could also be quite heavily corroded but may clean up with use.

Is it damp or mouldy - put a dehumidifier inside
