Soup mugs

I am horribly ill with a nasty virus and eating a lot of soup. I had some in a normal mug earlier but it wasn't quite right and it set me thinking about the retro soup mug-bowls that everyone's granny had in the 80s, with a gently bulbous belly, a good-sized mug handle, and a recipe for a soup printed on the side. It seems to be possible to buy the originals second-hand but I would much prefer something plain but in the same shape. I have looked at French onion soup bowls and they are not quite right as although they have the belly they don't tend to have the right kind of handle.

Has anyone seen them on their travels? Do they exist?

I pointed one out to my DH on saturday when I saw it in theecond hand shop near me. It had Mulligatawny on it, my favourite soup.

Try Ebay or Etsy

witchypaws · 27/11/2023 13:55

EBay has loads, search vintage soup bowl, I just checked

Koalatreats · 27/11/2023 13:57

Ooh I have 5 of these. I really need leek and potato 😂 I mentioned it on saturday in fact!

Koalatreats · 27/11/2023 13:59

Ahhh just checked eBay it’s mulligatawny I need. I thought I’d broken a leek one

MotherOfHouseplants · 27/11/2023 14:00

I don’t want the originals with the recipes or lettering on the side. I’m after mug-bowls in exactly that shape but plain, if anyone has seen them please.

Yes, but from what I can see they all have lettering printed on the side. I haven’t seen any plain ones.

I know this is veering off piste here, but I use a normal mug...however! It's crazy how different supermarkets' own brand tinned soup fill or don't a normal mug!

MaggieFS · 27/11/2023 14:06

I've never seen a plain version.

PickAChew · 27/11/2023 14:07

Not quite the same but the big Denby breakfast cups are brilliant for soup.

BigBoysDontCry · 27/11/2023 14:08

I have plain ones, well plain coloured but the ceramic has a pattern. Bought them in tk maxx, they have a microwave lid in plastic but the bowls are like soup bowls with a handle.

KimberleyClark · 27/11/2023 14:09

DH had one of these when we first met, the brown one. I still use it occasionally.

This shape is promising, but I’m not sure if it is big enough.

The lid looks handy but the shape is wrong. Thank you though!

I see it - the cauldron-shaped one?

MIL has a couple of Le Creuset mugs - Stoneware Grand Mug, we use them for soup at her house... they hold up to 400ml and seem to keep it hot - they look like big teacups and have a good handle.

That's definitely smaller than the juice ones that I have. Mine are more bowl shaped, though. The sort designed for dipping your croissant into your coffee or hot chocolate. I can get half a 600ml pot of chilled soup in mine.

these are gorgeous but expensive and would need to be shipped.
I wonder if you contacted an independent potter on Etsy then they might be able to make exactly what you want. My friend used to be a potter and I know she took commissions (especially when she first started her business)

I got two from Matalan - not sure if they're specifically for soup, but that's what we use them for as they're too chunky for tea/coffee.
