Rugby boots help

DS is fairly new to the sport. Just this year he started and he’s doing very well. We’ve made use of the clubs swap/sell kit for everything he needs including boots. He’s asked for boots for Christmas and we will happily buy these. I went to get the ones he wants this morning from a website called Lovell, however while I am happy to buy, the boots are showing as hard ground or soft ground. I don’t know what to do here. We are in Scotland. It can be hard ground and soft ground all in one match!

Has anyone got any tips on which to buy or do I just go with the ones he’s asked for?

Does he ever play on artificial surfaces? If so then hard ground

SliceOfBread · 26/11/2023 08:06

Hard ground - mouldies
soft ground - screw in studs.

I’d disagree on the point about artificial surfaces - I’m not sure what the laws are in Scotland, but on a RFU 4g pitch here in England you can not play in “blades” which are a type of hard ground boot.

Dh says he'd probably suggest soft rather than hard. Says it depends on position he plays too.
My ds plays and its soft ground ones he has

And if ds is on artificial pitches then he wears AstroTurf shoes not rugby boots (also in Scotland)

For what what’s it’s worth, I never played in hard ground boots - I only used them in pre-season.

You don’t say the age of your son, so not sure what level of contact they are doing in their rugby. But once he gets to live scrums any forward (numbers 1-8 if you aren’t aware) will want ‘soft ground’ boots.

My daughter always plays in soft ground boots.

Ignore my previous message - just checked DD’s boots and they’re soft ground! She also can’t wear blades on the all weather pitch. When I was looking up online for her new boots it suggested soft ground boots aren’t suitable for 4G/artificial pitches but nobody’s queried the soft boots on the 4G yet.
