Have you ever seen a Christmas tree on top of a car? In the UK?

This has been bothering me for a few weeks.
I have seen all sorts of Christmas bits that have a car with a Christmas tree on its roof. I have never seen this in real life in the UK. Have you?
Wrapping paper, jumpers, cushions, tree ornaments. Loads. But never an actual tree on a real car.
Why is this the fashion now? It's annoying me as much as Santa wearing a grey suit.

Yep, every year on my car. Apart from one year, where DH had a convertible so we stuck it in that with the roof down!

mathanxiety · 25/11/2023 20:48

I'm in the US and buy a fresh tree every year. Only one time have I ever put the tree inside the car, and that was because there was nobody available at the Home Depot to help me chuck it up on the roof rack and i had gone out to get the tree on my own.

I swore never to do it again as the upholstery got blobs of resin all over it, and everyone objected to sitting on pine needles that managed to hide themselves in every possible nook and cranny and magically reappear, all needley sharp and vengeful, in August.

I now buy my (6 foot or just under) tree at a place where they trim it and tie it to the roof rack with twine.

I see lots of cars with trees on the roof every December. It's not just done in movies.

Not a car but when I was a child my dad brought one home lashed to the side of the oil tanker he drove. It was the whole length of the tanker and although our house had high ceilings he had to cut lots off so it fitted in the room.

Many, many times in my life but not in the UK I don't think, although I had noticed lots of Christmas baubles with the motif.
It's no good in the boot because it gets sap and needles all over surely? Also if sold in a net you don't know if it's the right shape and symmetrical Shock

You choose it and then they net it for you so you can check its shape.

We usually put ours inside the car and it doesn't make a mess, but we always get Nordmanns which don't drop needles the same way Norway Spruce do.

mindutopia · 25/11/2023 20:59

How else do you get the tree home? We have a big work van so now we put it in there (Dh is really precious about anything touchy our shitty Skoda 🙄), but before that, always on the roof.

mondaytosunday · 25/11/2023 21:01

Surely - we did it ourselves a few times! Now our tree is more reasonably sized so can fit inside the car. We live in London.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 25/11/2023 21:01

Come to my village in Berkshire and you will see zillions leaving the Christmas tree farm.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/11/2023 21:03

Yes I did the other day

mrsed1987 · 25/11/2023 21:07

Yep saw one today outside the garden centre

Rouleur · 25/11/2023 21:11

Yes, that’s how we get ours home. And many other people do the same. Just tied to the roof bars. If you have roof bars why wouldn’t you?

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 25/11/2023 21:11

Yes.
I’ve also seen one in a convertible 🤷🏼‍♀️

Snozzlemaid · 25/11/2023 21:26

Yes! I saw one for the first time today.

Snugglemonkey · 25/11/2023 21:33

We have two tree farms close by. So pretty often!

StillWantingADog · 25/11/2023 21:34

Ours goes IN the car. But it’s a 6ft tree in a reasonably sized car. Bigger tree and/or smaller car and it would be strapped to the roof.

WhatNoUsername · 25/11/2023 21:37

Yes every year when we pick up our tree and strap it to the roof of the car!

You pick your tree and then a special machine nets it up for you- I was impressed first time I saw one of
those. Never get any needles in the car.

MrsMitford3 · 25/11/2023 21:41

Of course!! How else do people get their trees home?

WarningOfGails · 25/11/2023 21:42

Twice today!

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/11/2023 21:46

Literally this afternoon at the garden centre.

Back when I had a convertible we used to do the other stereotypical Christmas ad / movie thing of picking a dry day to buy the tree and taking the roof down to get it home.

gano · 25/11/2023 22:42

I walk my dog near a Christmas tree farm, and see this regularly through december.

Nightmarerels · 25/11/2023 22:45

Yes, but live close to the seller so can drive home on local roads.
