iPad Pro or MacBook Air for degree program?

Which would be better? Don't need it to do anything fancy!

Definitely a mac Book. An iPad really is rubbish for typing much on.

If you have a keyboard case for the iPad Pro, it is like having a laptop but I would say that you would be better off with a MacBook
