Graphic shots of man being rescued from blazing building in Reading by crane driver maneouvering with such skill. Why isn't he/she not being interviewed on media before being carried shoulder-high through the streets? Bravery award from the King at least.

Perhaps the man is satisfied that the man he rescued is alive and well and that's all he needs.
Perhaps he doesn't want a fuss, as far as he is concerned he used his skills to the best possible outcome and that's it it's finished.

@Whatineed - I'm not suggesting that being a crane driver is anything other than a skilled and dangerous job. Or that the crane driver in question didn't show amazing courage, quick thinking and ability. My point was just that it's clear from the footage that the crane wasn't on top of the building!

Which is why, in the second paragraph I wrote, I was agreeing with you.

The rest of my post was general information for other posters reading the thread.

@BeadedBubbles it WAS on the building. You can clearly see that the crane is attached to the top and side of the taller part of the SAME building!

There may well gave been a small crane on the building. But that us not the one that was used in the rescue. You can see in this image it was a large crane to the left of the building.

(I've circled the cage and the cable so you see - if you follow the cable up, it is from that large crane.)

That should be a Pride Of Britain Award winner right there!!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 27/11/2023 21:07

That's the same crane as PP picture. It's physically attached to the side of the building - it has to be, or it would fall over.

PianPianPiano · 27/11/2023 21:32

The crane is to the side, circled in red
Not on top of the building that is on fire.

The crane will be tied into the building, it’s absolutely too tall not to be. Fun fact for you all, some buildings are built around the tower crane and parts of it will never be removed and will be part of the building until it’s torn down.

He was in a dangerous situation and carried a very heroic thing. Yes what he used to rescue the worker is specifically used in a rescue operation such as this and he would have had training. But he saved that persons life, I’m not sure why we can’t just recognise that and have to argue whether he was in danger or not.

I have been on site when a man almost severed his arm with a chop saw, every trained first aider buckled. It took a 19 year old apprentice to step in and saved the man’s life, as well as his arm. She was also a hero and was awarded for it.

Not sure why some people on this thread can’t just be nice.

here’s the video which quite clearly shows the building on fire is the building the crane is attached too !

you can actually see people dampening the blaze with a hose which the crane is attached to from the left hand side to give him a safe exit route out off the roof which is on fire.

Are we going to argue that this construction worker wasn’t risking his life too now ?

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 27/11/2023 21:50

@PianPianPiano you can literally see on your photo where the crane is attached to the building

He acted quickly and clearly is super skilled. I live a few minutes away from the site and it was horrendous. There's been a gofund set up by one of his colleagues to buy the guy a few beers.
