How much do you sing?

I sing to every song I hear… in the car, radio. Adverts….
I can’t help myself. I am also tone deaf. My DH and teenagers are fabulous singers and hardly ever sing. Occasionally I am politely asked to stop 😂 Mostly they are long-suffering!

I sing all the time but not in public, I’m always singing to DD and pottering in my house. I remember being a teenager and recording my voice on a tape player, in my head it was brilliant but I couldn’t believe how awful it was in real life! I really can’t sing but it cheers me up and DD is still young enough to enjoy it regardless

AHeadForHeights · 23/11/2023 23:35

Yes. All the time. I sing at my children and my husband. I sing to myself. I sing in my head.I sing out loud along to the songs in my head. Dc2 finds it embarrassing when I sing in public so sometimes I sing along to the songs in the supermarket, just to be annoying.

babbi · 23/11/2023 23:41

@OneRingToRuleThemAll

can you explain /advise how someone can learn to sing please ?
Is a vocal coach necessary?
I would love to improve even a little to sound anything up a level from woeful !!

Radiodread · 23/11/2023 23:53

@Kwer most choirs are at least 80% women in my experience. Except in Wales, freak nation of males happy to sing in public. Also Russia and some former Soviet/ communist states. Otherwise, male singers are like gold dust, it’s such a shame. It’s weird how community/ home singing is so gendered but the commmercial music industry is so massively skewed toward blokes.

Radiodread · 24/11/2023 00:02

@babbi my top tip is to just sing sing sing as much as you can. If you want to challenge yourself, get a set of silicone earplugs and lightly plug your ears, and then sing. You will probably sound absolutely awful to yourself. But this is good! If you plug your ears and think you sound brilliant, then unless you’re Adele it’s probably time to stop.

but also, singing lead melodies along to recorded music is hard. Most of the vocalists you hear are adjusted after the event. Singing in harmony with others is about a million times easier and much more forgiving.

Catsmere · 24/11/2023 01:41

Never. Most I do is mime along when I hear a song from the 70s. I haven't the breath to sing, even badly.

OrangeSofa1 · 24/11/2023 06:40

@ILoveChocolateandCoffee
😂😂 must be hard living with a cat critic.
I am a primary school teacher and one of the rare times I try to avoid singing is at work. The children are too honest!

Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't sing.
I sing every song I hear, I sing a long to adverts, I sing while I'm shopping, cleaning, showering. I probably love the sound of my own voice 🤣 but it's good for the soul

Quiregirl · 24/11/2023 08:24

OrangeSofa1 · 23/11/2023 21:41

But do you sing when off duty? Kylie songs, we buy any car jingles etc? Or are you silent when not working?
@Quiregirl

Edited

I find, annoyingly, when I'm not working that I have 'earworms' from the songs I've been practicing. I wake in the middle of the night with phrases going around my head.
But yes, I sing along to the radio, find songs that match any snippets of ongoing conversation, sing to the dog, the children, sing while cooking or in the shower. Sing when I am getting in to bed to my husband 'Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to sleep with you again' etc... You get the picture. My family are very accommodating.

A coach isn't necessary at all, but they help with technique and "talent" comes from good technique and a LOT of practice.

I spend as much time singing scales and exercises as actual songs.

MarleyandMarleyWoo · 24/11/2023 08:28

Oh all the time. While cooking, while cleaning/tidying, while sorting the horses… but in the truck mainly, poor toddler DS has to listen to me belting out anything and everything from Metallica to Luke Combs to Blink 182 to Abba. My playlists are eclectic 😂 DS has started to join in tho, I’m so proud! His version of thunderstruck is adorable. I’m not a terrible singer… I’m not great, but I’m happy and that’s the main thing… right?? 😂

Loubelle70 · 24/11/2023 08:33

A lot lol. Im always singing..humming...but i whistle all the time 😂..a song in my head thats it... whistling 🤣. Im quite a happy person..and i think singing...whistling lets me be myself ... Many people have said you sound happy lol..im always like that. Is it so rare?. Then again..i had a guy say to me other month "its usually men that whistle"....i didn't reply... i stared him in the face, as i walked off whistling 'always look on the bright side of life:.... sexist git

I'm forever singing something but I'm a metal head so don't think DH or DS enjoy it as much as I do😆

Ha! Me too. Everlong is the song in my head atm... Whistling...singing...(with obligatory air guitar and head bang) good for me though is that DGS likes most of my music..so he joins in 😂

Northsideoftheriver · 24/11/2023 08:54

I adore singing and dare I say I'm quite good at it. I tend not to sing in front of others only my children. My 9 year old son is in a choir and I'm really proud of him. They had a concert last night and the boys sung together and looked so happy. I felt a tear in my eye, was very beautiful. Don't get me wrong, the girls were wonderful but like someone said up thread, you don't often see the older boys/men singing for the joy of it.

Singing makes me feel alive, brings happiness. It's healing.

familyissues12345 · 24/11/2023 09:07

Everyday! Love to sing, it always makes my DH laugh as I sing along to adverts, the radio, even just to the dog Grin

I sing at work too as I work with children..

Penelopepisspot · 24/11/2023 09:29

All the time. My husband says I have a song for every occasion because I can launch into an apposite half-remembered music hall number no matter how niche the subject matter.

IHeartGeneHunt · 24/11/2023 09:32

All the time to the radio! Greatest Hits Radio. I love it.
To amuse/annoy the child I sing the wrong lyrics to cbeebies theme tunes.

tigger1001 · 24/11/2023 10:24

I sing all the time when on my own. Love singing but am tone deaf!! Try and not inflict my singing on others.

Octaviathethird · 24/11/2023 10:29

Eyesopenwideawake · 23/11/2023 22:14

I used to bloody love singing. In the car, along with the radio - anywhere and everywhere. Then I had a thyroidectomy that went wrong and now I only have one viable vocal cord. It took 6 months to learn to talk again but I've no singing range. Hmmmm. Have recently decided not to accept this as 'fact' and looking for a singing coach.

Similar here, I have always been tone deaf but loved singing anyway, including making up silly songs about what I was doing at the time! Unfortunately my thyroidectomy partially paralysed one of my vocal cords and now I just croak everything, I sound like Madge from neighbours, it makes me sad. At my DD's birthday party I tried joining in with 'happy birthday' but people were looking at me so I had to stop. My DD still likes me to sing to her though, she doesn't care what my voice sounds like, I just have to make sure no-one else is around first!

Quiregirl · 24/11/2023 10:31

We should start a Mumsnet choir

yarnwitch · 24/11/2023 10:37

Me! I've always loved singing and wish I had a good voice but sadly I don't.
My parents laughed at my voice as a child and my DH has made comments too, so I only sing alone (and pretend I sound good Grin)
Personally I love hearing people sing whether they're good or not. Never be the reason someone stops singing!

Eyesopenwideawake · 24/11/2023 10:39

@Octaviathethird - strange how losing the ability to sing causes such an impact, isn't it?

DustyMaiden · 24/11/2023 10:43

In the choir and when alone. I don’t inflict it on my family.

bookworm14 · 24/11/2023 10:45

I sing all the time, both around the house and as a hobby. I’ve done choral singing since childhood and currently sing with a well known London choir. Singing is so good for the body and mind - I can highly recommend joining a choir whatever your level of ability.
