How much do you sing?

I sing to every song I hear… in the car, radio. Adverts….
I can’t help myself. I am also tone deaf. My DH and teenagers are fabulous singers and hardly ever sing. Occasionally I am politely asked to stop 😂 Mostly they are long-suffering!

I used to bloody love singing. In the car, along with the radio - anywhere and everywhere. Then I had a thyroidectomy that went wrong and now I only have one viable vocal cord. It took 6 months to learn to talk again but I've no singing range. Hmmmm. Have recently decided not to accept this as 'fact' and looking for a singing coach.

IrisBearded · 23/11/2023 22:16

I sing (and dance around at home alone) all the time too, cleaning, mowing the lawn, cooking, walking, in the car - usually with my earpods in.

I was thinking tonight that maybe my memory is so terrible for everything because I have a head full of song lyrics instead. And I can't sing , have only done karaoke once in my life and I'm pretty quiet and introverted!

portalane · 23/11/2023 22:17

I sing throughout the day with my toddler - we have 6 songs that I sing every night at bedtime, I join in songs at toddler group and a few more at home when I need to distract her especially if I'm busy with my hands.

I'm a bit shy with singing in front of the older members of my family so don't sing much at home. I used to have days in the house when I wfh and had the house to myself and loved singing along to 80s/90s songs on YouTube. But don't have the place to myself much any more. I've had singing lessons in the past and performed in choirs so I'm OK at it.

Beckafett · 23/11/2023 22:18

Tone deaf and I can't sing a note but all the time. I listen to music a lot during the day and i find it really helpful to engage in it as I do tasks. My kids don't complain too much about it 😂

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 23/11/2023 21:54

All the time. I've had vocal lessons once a week for the last 4 years and sing in a choir.

Almost no one is tone deaf or can't sing. It's just that the voice is an instrument they haven't learnt to play yet.

@OneRingToRuleThemAll I feel slightly privileged to be one of the few truly tone deaf people around 😂

YellowMeeple · 23/11/2023 22:21

Twice a year. When I sing Happy Birthday to each child. Outside that and before having children, literally never- even on my own. I have never heard DH sing in the 20+ years I have known him.

Whoknowswhatanymore · 23/11/2023 22:24

Another professional singer here and love singing but don’t constantly sing. However, I think everyone should sing as much as they want regardless of whether they are in tune or not as it has so many health benefits and lifts your mood! Sing away 🎶

Radiodread · 23/11/2023 22:25

I sing about 30% of my waking hours.

I used to drive my ex partner completely insane —but he had no real love of music, fucken wierdo—

Inane conversations and throwaway remarks inevitably trigger my annoying brain into a song featuring that word. it’s like a compulsion. Even I would be annoyed to live with me as a partner. Which is why I’m happily single.

Singint is probably my single biggest pleasure in life, and it’s totally free. Lucky me.

I’m now really struggling with my hearing so am self conscious about singing in public without my hearing aids., but that doesn’t concern me when I’m home alone ;)

Headband · 23/11/2023 22:26

I have a good ear for music (according to my music teacher when I was at school) but I just can't sing. I've tried to follow singing tutorials on YouTube but I just can't seem to hit the notes.

Radiodread · 23/11/2023 22:34

@Eyesopenwideawake oh, that really sucks. I’m sorry. Don’t give up. I’m with you, find that vocal coach and go for it.

IaltagDhubh · 23/11/2023 22:38

Pretty much never. I get no joy from singing, although I love music. I’m far too self conscious and wouldn’t dream of inflicting my racket on other people. I don’t even sing happy birthday and I don’t think I ever sang to my DC when they were babies.

My mum, on the other hand, must be singing at least 90% of the time she’s awake. Used to drive me absolutely batty and I found it so embarrassing when I was younger, but I’ve learnt to tune it out now. I think she doesn’t even realise she’s doing it a lot of the time. I just don’t understand how someone can do that.

Horsedoglover59 · 23/11/2023 22:44

I enjoy driving by myself because then I can sing along to the radio without my DOH making remarks about cats being in pain etc. We don't have children at home, and as they are his children, they've probably never heard me sing. Even I know I can't sing, but I really wish I could, I love it - pretty much any genre except garage and rap! But if I'm home by myself the radio or my phone goes on, and I'm singing away whilst I do the housework. Someone told me once that anyone can be taught to sing, but I really think they'd be hard pushed to teach me!

Sawitch · 23/11/2023 22:49

I love singing and have belonged to choirs since I was 7. I was in hospital waiting for an operation and to distract myself I was listening to Verdi’s requiem and singing along quietly. One of the nurses approached me and asked if everything was OK as one of my fellow patients had told her I was crying!

Igmum · 23/11/2023 23:02

All the time to the cats Grin. I used to sing to DD when she was little but now behaviour like that gets me eye rolls.

boobies1234 · 23/11/2023 23:10

I sing all day, in the car, in the kitchen and in my office if I'm alone. I can sing, I used to in shows as a child. My girls sing a lot too, one can sing, other is not so good. But it brings joy so we don't care.
My husband never sings, ever

Radiodread · 23/11/2023 23:10

@Sawitch that really made me laugh! I’m sure you sounded beautiful.

personally I believe there are very few people who couldn’t make an acceptable contribution to a community type choir and get loads of enjoyment out of it.

if you’re a person who sings at home all the time but thinks they are tone deaf, I’d give a choir a try. You might really love it.

Sgtmajormummy · 23/11/2023 23:14

I always have an ear worm going on, and they say the best way to stop it is to bring it to the end, so I often have to resort to YouTube to get all the lyrics right.
Recent examples: Respect by Erasure, Misty by Ella Fitzgerald, Here you Come Again by Dolly Parton.
I had one of Mozart’s Divertimenti going round my head for months, never resolving itself!
But I’ve always sung and have a pretty good range of tones. It’s the lung power I’m missing.

Lesina · 23/11/2023 23:16

I sing when I am leading the horses out in the mornings.. mainly show tunes. They seem to appreciate it :)

DramaAlpaca · 23/11/2023 23:18

All the time. At work, at home, in the car, not in the shower though, that's quiet thinking time. I've always got a song playing inside my head, even when there's no music on. It makes me happy. When there's no music in my head it's a sure sign I'm depressed.

Firefly2009 · 23/11/2023 23:19

At home - all the time to my cats. I've no idea what it sounds like other than ridiculous.

I don't bother singing along to songs that I like because it would ruin them

But I do like attempting opera when I'm in an echoey toilet.

ZenNudist · 23/11/2023 23:20

I love singing and sing all the time. I sing in my church choir and once got to sing on stage at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

I sing at the dc all the time. Last week I sang come on baby brush your teeth to the doors come on baby light my fire.

Radiodread · 23/11/2023 23:22

@DramaAlpaca that’s so true. I had 5 years of infrequent music in my head and very little singing (Altho I still sung to my daughter a bit). Looking back, I was really depressed during that time. When I came out of it, I started singing again.

lack of mental music is now my tell that things aren’t ok, but luckily it’s only happened for very short periods since

Literally this is me. Glad others are the same x

Radiodread · 23/11/2023 23:24

@ZenNudist that is legend. You could YouTube that.

Kwer · 23/11/2023 23:30

All the time, my mum and sisters do too in their houses. Usually while doing housework or driving.

All our husbands and sons dislike it / won’t join in.

Is it a female thing?! Like the need to dance?

I feel sad we’re all singing alone in our separate houses with grumpy men commentating, and no one singing along.
