Just that. I'm so excited to go! Want a good view 👀

Depending obviously on visibility and the flight path, yes.

Loverofoxbowlakes · 23/11/2023 20:36

Manhattan is about 15 miles from JFK, and only one (of 4) aerial approaches to the airport would potentially fly over the city - it would be quite unlikely that you would have any sort of view of the city even with the right weather, visibility etc.

At the moment, planes are departing JFK on the runway that heads towards Manhattan, but they turn quite quickly away from the city. The photo attached shows a flight path of a flight due to arrive in London in an hour, you can see how soon it turns away, it won't be high enough to see much.

Sorry OP. When I went for the first time I was like a loon on the transfer trying to get my first glimpse of the skyline!

Book a helicopter trip if you want to see it from the sky.

Phunkychicken · 23/11/2023 20:41

When I flew in (35 years ago) the pilot circled the stature of liberty for us! That was from Gatwick to Newark

Okay. I'll do it in a minute I just need to wait for my servant to finish cleaning my Lamborghini

We saw nothing inbound but had an amazing view on the night flight back - we took off around 9pm and the lights were fantastic.

ThePlacesYouWillGo123 · 23/11/2023 20:46

You'll see it in the distance as you land (usually best views from ABC seats. Good views at nighttime if take off is the right direction. Skyline is magical - been 6 times and can never get enough.

Husband is a pilot and flies in regularly

We saw the skyline it in the distance about 5/10 mins before landing, we were sat on the right side of the plane, very surreal and actually made me tear up a little bit!

SecretVictoria · 23/11/2023 21:34

Depends which way you fly in. Last year we flew past the Statue of Liberty, never done that before or since. I’ve never seen the Manhattan skyline on approach, but as pp said the lights at night are fantastic.

StillWantingADog · 23/11/2023 21:37

Not a close up but you’ll possibly see it in the distance
Newark is better

eurochick · 23/11/2023 21:38

Pop over to New Jersey. You get an amazing view of Manhattan from there. And it's a lot cheaper than a helicopter.

yesyesitsaparkingone · 23/11/2023 21:41

OP, I think the yellow cab ride fromjfk to Manhattan is quite a good compromise. Hopefully yellow cab drivers are as good as they have always been (I used to live in New York but haven’t been for ages) and you go through a ginormous graveyard and then tada! Manhattan skyline is in front of you.

Zippedydoodahday · 23/11/2023 21:41

I've been half a dozen times and never had a view of Manhattan.

mugofstew · 23/11/2023 21:46

Newark has a great view but that isn't likely to help.

Honeyroar · 23/11/2023 21:48

I was cabin crew and went every month for two decades. I’d say you’re more likely to not see it. But if you get a cab or bus in you will.,
And another vote for a helicopter trip while you’re there. Liberty helicopters are great. Not cheap but a once in a lifetime thing. (Book the cheapest flight, I did and got upgraded onto a longer flight as nobody else had booked the short one!)
Great views from Dumbo on the other side of Brooklyn bridge. I walked across Manhattan bridge and back across Brooklyn bridge- tbe views of Brooklyn bridge and tbe skyline behind it were fantastic from Manhattan bridge…
