I will be doing a long drive soon and I want to make a playlist and I'm looking for inspiration.
Whats everyone's favourite road trip songs, favourite songs in general? Anything goes genre wise and when the songs are from looking to have a big mix of songs on the go. Thanks!

ZzTop - most things, but especially the Eliminator album
Chris Rea - Road to Hell and Fool If You Think It's Over
Beatles - there's a really good version of Saw Her Standing There from when Billy Joel played Shea Stadium and had Paul McCartney as a guest for that song.
Toto - Hold The Line
Queen - live version of Somebody to Love from Montreal
The Cars - Just What I Needed and You Might Think
Halestorm did a fabulous cover of Lady Gaga's Bad Romance
Can't go wrong with a bit of John Denver either

Layeredlikeaknittedonion · 23/11/2023 15:25

Great start! I didn't think anyone was going to answer haha.
I had the beatles and Queen on my list but will investigate the rest, I'm intregued by the halestorm cover...

Have you considered an audio book as an option? I really enjoy listening to one on a long journey.

Layeredlikeaknittedonion · 23/11/2023 15:59

@Nochoiceleft yes, I've listened to them in the car and enjoy them but will have kids in the car for part of the journey so wouldn't be able listen to the books I would enjoy, but it's a good suggestion!

Let me know what you think. I stumbled across it by accident and discovered not only an excellent cover (better than the original in my opinion), but a really good band too.

HappiestSleeping · 23/11/2023 18:43

Hanoi Rocks did a good cover of Up Around The Bend
Van Halen - pretty much anything but the Balance tour live version of Jump is amazing.
Great White - Rock Me
ELO - Turn to Stone
Miley Cyrus - Heart of Glass cover, and Jolene cover (Dolly is her godmother apparently)
Eric Clapton - Bad Love, Forever Man, Pretending
Micheal Bolton - Steel Bars, but only the version where he duets with Orianthi which has killer guitar.
On that note, Orianthi's first album is pretty good.

I'm trying to pick some less obvious stuff for you.

Layeredlikeaknittedonion · 23/11/2023 20:09

@HappiestSleeping would be very interested in hearing the heart of glass cover as i really enjoyed her version of Jolene.
Good to see the mix of stuff that is coming up though.

She did a live version at the iheart festival. It's on Spotify. Not a bad version at all.

Are your children at the age they’d enjoy the Harry Potter books read by Stephen Fry. I’ve listened to the with my DDs as we’ve driven miles and miles and enjoyed them just as much as they did!

UsingChangeofName · 23/11/2023 23:55

If it's a loooooooong journey, Meatloaf's 'Bat Out of Hell' Album will probably take you halfway there. Can't really do a long journey with it.

Layeredlikeaknittedonion · 24/11/2023 07:19

@HappiestSleeping I've listened to both those covers and really enjoyed them. I had heard of halestorm but not listened to them so I think I'll have a listen to some other stuff. It also reminded me to stick lacuna coil, flyleaf, evanescence and within temptation (not listened to in donkeys) on the list somewhere.
Love Miley, and that song so that is also going on.

@justjuggling we listened to James and the giant peach not too long ago, not sure they are quite HP ready but trust me when they are it will be going on as I love Steven Fry reading them. I admit this song inspiration is totally for me as they will be quite happy in the back, we bought little lap tray type things so they can colour, go on their tablet etc. I'm stuck driving lol.

Great mix of songs going on, some I haven't heard of so will give them a listen too. I just thought if I'm stuck in a car for ages and get fed up of listening to the same stuff this was probably the best place to get a good mix of things across different genres and times!

So would people recommend Spotify opposed to say YouTube music or amazon etc?

Glad you're enjoying the suggestions. I'll keep thinking and trawling my playlists.

I used to use Google Play music, but when it switched to YouTube Music the functionality reduced so I stopped it. My wife has Spotify, so we just use that, however if you have neither, then YouTube may be worth a look in case it also gives ad free access to YouTube on the TV. If it does, and you are a viewer of YouTube on the TV that may well be a deciding factor. I watch YouTube more than 'normal' TV now, and the ads drive me nuts.

greengreengrass25 · 24/11/2023 09:11

Daydream Believer- Monkees
