Is this dress okay for Christmas party? (With pics)

And if I like this, what other dresses would I like?

It's a black tie event, have been many years on the trip, quite an extravagant party with dinner and a big party. Flame throwers etc. people where dinner / cocktail dresses and some wear shorter dresses but nothing casual.

I love this dress, but not sure if it's Christmas party vibes.

What's everyone's thoughts? I'm so torn as I don't know where else I'd wear it and I absolutely love it.

Also open to suggestions please!

Ah well I'd say Dress to Impress is open to interpretation and this dress would be absolutely fine!

eandz13 · 23/11/2023 10:00

Eh? I don't understand some of these comments at all!

I would say that is absolutely black-tie party dress (although I think technically black tie dresses are meant to be floor length, buts is 2023, who gives a shit except perhaps the royals?). Casual?!

The dress is lovely, you look banging and, most importantly, if you love the dress you'll feel confident in it and be able to have a great night.

That early 2000s look is back in, so I'd ignore posters saying it looks dated!

It's back but with modern twists as all fashion does when it comes back around. OP would look great in anything but it looks like it's been hiding in her wardrobe since 2001.

For 'dress to impress' it absolutely fits the bill. Personally I prefer the lovely black dress that someone posted further up thread but OP if you love the dress and feel good in it then go for it.

Look how high the front is. You can nearly see underwear.

Depends on height differences, and honestly this was just an example of a sequin mini dress as said.

EllaPaella · 23/11/2023 10:07

It is in no way 'inappropriate' for 'dress to impress'

BIossomtoes · 23/11/2023 10:08

The River Island dress is lovely. Really, really don’t like the first one - way too much skin on show.

A lot of people think it’s very dated as said, I don’t think it’s anywhere near a recent buy, and as a pp said, it’s a bit strictly now.

howver I agree she can get away with it and it’s just one night, and if she loves it, that’s all that matters.

if she has the money though, and she might not, I’d go for something a bit more current.

Seas164 · 23/11/2023 10:12

The blue dress is fun for a party, I think you look gorgeous. However, it's a bit too Debbie McGee for black tie. Steer away from fun, you're looking for elegant, and you would look stunning in dresses most people couldn't go near.

Olika · 23/11/2023 10:20

Personally I would wear something more covering for work dos but if you feel comfortable in it then go for it. If the team is 'dress to impress' then this fits the bill.

DysonArseWrap · 23/11/2023 10:47

Hmm mixed opinions.
It's actually a relatively recent buy, it's about 2 years old.

White tie - floor length ball/evening gowns. Black tie - cocktail dresses or evening gown both acceptable.

WinteryWonderland · 23/11/2023 10:57

I have to agree with what someone else said. Britney Spears vibes. It looks a bit cheap (so sorry!)
I think maybe something a bit longer/more elegant/classy. This is a bit too short and skimpy. You'll be judged unfortunately if it's a posh event.

KnowYouAreLoved · 23/11/2023 11:17

I wouldn't wear the OPs dress but I absolutely think it fits the bill in terms of dress to impress. It's not a current trend but so what? The OP likes it and feels comfortable and looks fabulous in it! 90's/00's is actually bang on trend anyway, but even if it wasn't does it really matter?

I can't believe someone said it was casual 😂 brilliant.

MumblesParty · 23/11/2023 11:22

Looks perfect for a Christmas party to me. In fact, I can’t think of a better occasion for a dress like that.

Strictly come dancing? The Paul Daniels magic show aka Debbie McGee? Flamingo dancing? 😄

just kidding op. You like it, wear it, as said all along, you can defo get away with it, who cares if it’s a bit of a dated style.

limefrog · 23/11/2023 11:36

So does it say 'black tie' or not?

'Dress to impress' is not really the same as 'black tie'.

The dress is fine for the former, but nowhere near formal enough for the latter.

It says dress to impress, but all the men wear black tie / suits

It's not a black tie dress code just because men wear suits. Most men tend to wear suits to all evening/ formal events.

If it's black tie dress code then that's what it says on the invite and it means something specific.

Surely if you've been to the event before then you know what people wear better than anyone here and whether it would fit in.

Two years is not recent in relation to clothes.

Elastica23 · 23/11/2023 11:50

It's absolutely fine for a regular black tie event and looks lovely on you @DysonArseWrap . And "dress to impress" - fits the bill perfectly.

Women wear both short and long dresses at black tie events, and also jump suits, tuxedos and other trouser suits.

I would only worry about wearing that dress if there were another level of formality such as royalty being present or being a military event.

Luckingfovely · 23/11/2023 11:51

In terms of the dress itself, no matter when you bought it, It looks absolutely cheap, dated, and costumey, rather than black tie, elegant, or modern. Also far too revealing for most work events (not all depending on industry, but definitely most).

On the other hand - you look awesome in it and if you like the look then wear it!

It's your choice, I think the thread has been mostly in agreement about the dress not being great, so it's up to you now - have fun! Smile

And how old do you think some of the men's dinner jackets will be.

The planet is fucked if people throw away clothes because they are two years old.

I think you look great OP, this is mumsnet- people act like anything above the ankle is inappropriate.
