Really stupid driving mistake…

I’m an experienced driver. Just came up to a roundabout which I use fairly regularly, I’d say a few times a week at least.

It’s a standard sized roundabout but irregular in that you need to be in the right hand lane to go straight on. I just went round in the left lane totally mindlessly and thought to myself, why is there a driver in the right hand lane? They better not cut me up… not even realising it was me in the wrong. Obviously they braked and then slammed on the horn. I would have done the same. I feel so stupid, that could’ve been an accident. I’m not new to the roundabout or driving so why on earth was I so careless?

Surely can’t be and hope it isn’t memory loss as I’m only in my twenties. Maybe it’s because it was dark or I have a lot on my mind. Would you be worried if you’d done this or do I need to just move on?

Move on and don't overthink it beyond accepting the natural inclination to pay a bit more attention driving when you do have a lot on your mind.

Don’t overthink. You made a mistake, you acknowledged it, you analysed the possible causes. It was Gods mercy that stopped it being an accident. Give thanks to God and move on from the experience. 😘

We all make mistakes. You’re only human!

Fordian · 22/11/2023 18:12

Everyone makes driving mistakes. 99.999% lead to no consequences, thankfully.

You're right to spend a bit of time thinking on it, but then move on.

Recognising what could have happened, then accepting your responsibility will make you a better driver.

That's why cars have horns! I went into someone a couple of years ago on a roundabout, she just pulled out in front of me and her brand new car crumpled under mine.
When she got out she basically said that she got confused about who's right of way it was........i also don't think the massive dog that was sitting on her lap helped either.

I tend to find if I do something on autopilot, its something I've done a thousand times before. You can get into the habit of checking you are 'in the present' when you are driving.

SarahShorty · 22/11/2023 18:54

I doubt it's memory loss. It's an irregular roundabout, right? So not a typical roundabout, which means you likely just autopiloted. I feel so hypocritical for saying this as I'm always beating myself up over things like this, but don't beat yourself up over it. The horn is to be used to alert others of your presence, and you were honked, which means someone alerted you to their presence. An accident was not caused and everything and everyone was fine. You recognise you made a mistake, you're learning from it and now you just need to not do it again.

@FtRttS why wasn’t God so merciful with those four lads in Wales then? You should be ashamed of yourself.

I don't think they meant it like that. I've recently started to re-establish my relationship with God because life is so hard these days that I have to believe in something. I choose God. I don't care what others think, it's my choice. I could believe in a vegetable patch in my garden and pray to it every night, if it gives me something to hold on to in trying times, then no harm done. As tragic as that incident in Wales was, jumping down a theist's throat isn't the best reaction imo.

Ashamed? What an absurd way to look at events that are out of our hands. This poster avoided a tragic accident due to a divine intervention, the poor lads in wales didn’t. You should apologise for your wicked words! Don’t sully the memory of those boys with your dirty words.
