I have been bleeding heavily and continuously from my vagina for 40 days. I am 32, I have PCOS and my last episode of continuous bleeding was after my son was born in 2021 and I bled for 16 months non stop. That eventually resolved itself and I fell into normal cycles (35ish day cycles for me normally, period last between 4 and 7 days).

My PCOS does not cause continuous bleeding for me, it causes the occasional very long cycle and sometimes cycles where I don’t ovulate.

I contacted my GP 2 weeks ago and got a phone appointment with a phone GP service a week later which I attended, and he sent me for a blood test because I am anaemic. This blood test has confirmed I am severely anaemic (HB is at 8.1) and yet instead of thinking ‘shit we need to find out why and stop this woman bleeding’ the action plan from my GP has been to prescribe me iron tablets and leave it at that (I am already taking iron tablets unprescribed and have been for 4 weeks because I’m not an idiot and knew I was having a bad period and would need topping up. This was before the period didn’t stop). I also have trans something acid which is supposed to stop the bleeding but I have repeatedly expressed that this is not working to the GP’s.

Today, I very suddenly flooded through a pair of heavy duty period pants and a maternity pad (I wear this combination 24/7 at the moment) and ruined an office chair at work. Totally saturated it and left a saturated patch about 20cm in diameter.

I have been to the GP’s 8 times about heavy periods and twice in the last 40 days, and have not been offered any further investigations like a scan despite insisting this is not normal for me. They appear to be convinced this is PCOS related.

Are there any medical people on here who can advise me how to navigate the system here? It feels like they’re content to just leave me like this but I think something is really wrong with me.

@Draculaswetdream I'm so pleased that your results have been, on the balance, better than they could have been. Obviously not what you want still, but not worst case scenario! Wishing you all the best and a recovery of all your symptoms.

Hi all, I have quite an update for you if anyone is still interested in my wonky organs.

I’ve been seen by gynae, I’m on the waiting list for a hysterectomy. The bleeding stopped and hasn’t restarted other than very very light spotting. I had what I think might have been a period about 4 weeks ago.

DH and I have come to terms with the idea of an hysterectomy and the prospect we’re not going to have our second baby. We were very sad about this, but not getting full blown cancer was more important long term and the chances of us successfully having another one are slim.

So that night when the northern lights were over the U.K., we were sat up watching them in the garden and it was a really lovely night. We got carried away and I’m not sure how or by what mechanism but it looks like I’ve rogue ovulated, and it appears I’m going to have to come off the waiting list for a while Grin

It’s very early days, everything and nothing could go wrong at this point but part of me thinks this is what is meant for us.

Please help me because the NHS won’t

That is an amazing update! Hope all goes well with your pregnancy.

Draculaswetdream · 24/05/2024 18:43

Thanks all, we can’t quite get our heads around it in the loveliest way.

I need to get on the GP’s radar fairly quickly so all being well I’ll update them the week after next and get next steps. I’m guessing they’ll want to scan sooner rather than later and have a chat about risks etc.

@Draculaswetdream

Congratulations! Lovely news.

Also, find out how long the waitlist is (phone hospital appointments and/or consultant’s secretary) - it could be you will have a 2yo by the time you are at the top of the list.

If it’s shorter you can always ask to defer and they will drop you back to the bottom.

The main thing is stay on it at least until baby is born, you’ve stopped bf and your health has been reassessed post pregnancy. Some of the wait lists are 3-10yrs!!
