If a murmuration...

... is a flock of flocks, then what is a similarly nice word for herd of herds or for shoal of shoals?

Does murmuration only apply to starlings, or doesn't it matter?

I suspect that in both the cases I've mentioned, the words would be super-herd and super-shoal, but I think there ought to be nicer words, as murmuration is so much nicer than boring old super-flock.

So what word(s) do you think we could use for shoal of shoals, and herd of herds?

If I come up with any, I'll post them.

Someone has suggested 'flotation' for shoal of shoals.

A herd of herds has to be a 'thunderation' surely?

All those thundering hooves.

Mrsjayy · 17/05/2024 19:22

Surely its just Herds sorry is that not helpful 😄

Mrsjayy · 17/05/2024 19:24

Oh it's just Starlings no other birds do it.

I like thunderation for a huge herd, that's great! Just what I was hoping for, imaginative and descriptive.

I can imagine a thunderation of buffalo on the great plains....

Excellent word, imo 👏

A murmuration of starlings is one of nature's most beautiful spectacles, thank you for the reminder!

Snugglemonkey · 29/05/2024 22:48

I shall be adopting thunderation! It is a beautiful word and definitely on the same wavelength as murmuration.
