My Autistic son who we were told would never talk and needed to be in a specialised environment

Is attending his graduation ceremony today, having got a 2.1 in games development.

He is my elder son and is now 24. He was diagnosed at two and a half with what was then called classic autism. We were told we needed to teach him makaton, that he wouldn't ever talk. When he was 7 he began to talk in small sentences. He was unable to potty train and we were told that this would not change, when he was 6 he came out of full time nappies, by the time he was 10 he was no longer having soiling incidents. He was explosively violent. We were told he needed to be in a special school. That we were unrealistic.

He drove to collect his gown in his own car and has no lectures this week for the master's he's currently doing.

I don't give a fuck that this is a boasty thread. He is amazing. He has worked so hard and defied expectations all his life and I want to shout it from the rooftops. I'd like to take his degree and his driving licence and wave it in the faces of the experts who constantly told us how delusional we were to even expect that one day he would look at us!

This is bloody awesome!

FairfaxAikmann · 22/11/2023 13:47

You might see this as a boast, but first parents who are currently in the situation you once were may see it as hope - I certainly do.

My 5.5 year old is speech delayed and not toilet trained but smart as hell.
Thankfully we got him into an ASN unit and he's thriving.

Squirrelsbite · 22/11/2023 13:49

huge well done to your lad 😊

thequeenoftarts · 22/11/2023 13:57

That's just fab, I'd be shouting it from the rooftops as well. I hope you have a lovely graduation day.

Namenotavailableagain · 22/11/2023 14:01

I love threads/posts like this! What wonderful news and how unbelievably proud you must rightly be!

Well done to your son and to you as a family

Flowergirl45 · 22/11/2023 14:28

Wonderful! Congratulations to your son!

Boomboom22 · 22/11/2023 14:36

Well done. And also I hope the many many parents of children with sen who are pushing the idea that it is ableist to provide help amd support to autistic people in order to help them make their way in society are also reading and recognising some of the ways they might be accidentally holding their child back or disadvsntaging them because its too hard or seems to take too long to make progress.
Yours is not an isolated case and it seems unless you do it yourself against 'specialist' advice professionals are happy to let people have not great lives.

AbbeyGailsParty · 22/11/2023 14:37

Congratulations to your brilliant son and to you his brilliant mum.
I hope you all have a brilliant Graduation day.

elsaandanna · 22/11/2023 14:38

Brilliant to read this! How lovely to have some good news

Annonymiss123 · 22/11/2023 14:40

Wonderful post @IncompleteSenten! Your son sounds like an amazing young man - and is lucky to have amazing parents fighting his corner.

Enjoy the celebrations - and best of luck to your son with his Masters.

lshaslam · 22/11/2023 14:41

@IncompleteSenten this is the best thing I've read all day. Shout from the rooftops 🎉🎉❤️❤️

Yeastygirl · 22/11/2023 14:43

Amazing Smileand I bet so much due to your dedication and love

Patchworksack · 22/11/2023 14:46

That’s fantastic - congratulations! If you do still have contact details please send an update to anyone that was negative about him as a baby. Hopefully they will be delighted to be proved wrong.
We were told my daughter would never walk and talk - she’s 9 and never stops rabbiting on and is thriving in mainstream. The medical literature for her condition is extremely gloomy about prognosis but it’s important to let clinicians know that there is a spectrum of outcomes and they should never write a child off. I send our neurologist a Christmas card with an update every year 😉
Well done to your son and the family who believed in him!

user1497207191 · 22/11/2023 14:47

Boast away, you and he deserve it. You must both be so proud that you persevered and got through those dark days.

Coyoacan · 22/11/2023 14:47

I'm so glad you and he did not give up.

brokenbitbybit · 22/11/2023 14:48

Can't describe how much I love this 🩷🥲

Huge well done to him x

DelightfullyDotty · 22/11/2023 14:59

That’s amazing OP❤️. In tears reading this. I also have an autistic DS who I never thought would cope with uni but is now at Warwick and coping better than I am!

You deserve all this praise….I know how rare it is in real life. I get no recognition for all the effort I put in fighting his corner x

FlipsSakeMum · 22/11/2023 17:24

Wow, your last post is quite the read. I love your acknowledgement that your son's stubbornness has helped him on his journey to adulthood - it sounds like he had the best role models ever on how to be stubborn from his Mum and Dad. 😅

I hope you've all had a wonderful day. 😊👨🏻‍🎓

RingofBrodgar · 22/11/2023 17:35

This is wonderful. Congratulations on his achievements

Munchyseeds2 · 22/11/2023 17:41

Daftasabroom · 22/11/2023 17:42

That is awesome @IncompleteSenten

MyKindOfWonderful · 22/11/2023 17:48

This is without a doubt the most inspiring thread l have read on MN.
You shout loud and proud OP, and keep shouting because it will give hope to others.

gotomomo · 22/11/2023 17:51

Congratulations to your son op.

Our story is similar, dd talked at 4.5, potty trained (ish) at 5, fought for mainstream and is currently at university. Not plain sailing but being female things are a bit different.

A shout out to all the other parents advocating for their dc wherever in life they end up

lifeisbollux · 22/11/2023 17:53

Wow. Absolutely wonderful! Congratulations to your son and to you. You sound like a bloody amazing mother, shout it from the rooftops!

PartTimeLove · 22/11/2023 17:58
