What's the best medication for drying up a runny nose?

Got a nasty cold. The aches and pains seem to be dying down but I've got loads of snot and gale force sneezes. Most cold medication seems to 'unblock a stuffy nose', but I've got the opposite problem!

Night Nurse is great at bedtime but what can I take that will stop the snot during the day? Some people say paracetamol but it's never worked for me

Sudofed is great for clearing congestion, seek advice from your pharmacist - you can buy it over the counter.

unvillage · 21/11/2023 20:46

Nasal decongestant spray stops the mucus being produced. But only use it for a couple of days or your nose gets used to it and it'll get worse!

Lottapianos · 21/11/2023 20:46

'Sudofed is great for clearing congestion'

That's the opposite of what I need! I'm not congested, I'm absolutely streaming

There used to be a product called Contac 400 that did just this. I also take antihistamines if really bad and it can help a bit

MiniMaxi · 21/11/2023 20:49

Piriton - off label use but a GP suggested we try it

Thro · 21/11/2023 20:49

sorry congestion was the wrong word!

Sudofed stops the streaming too - I’ve found soon after you take it, you stream more but then it clears.

catchmewhenifall · 21/11/2023 20:50

Eh? Congestion is streaming mucus!

Anyway a decongestant spray such as audited will dry you up and clear congestion.

I have Piriton! Will give it a whirl, thanks

*Sudofed

But yes also an antihistamine works a bit too.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 21/11/2023 20:51

If you can find it the blue Actifed syrup

I was actually going to suggest paracetomol.

I was also going to suggest an antihistamine - so hope the Piriton works for you.

Or use salt water and flush it round your nasal passages (jala neti style).

Hope you feel better soon, a nose that runs like a tap is sooo annoying!

VerityUnreasonble · 21/11/2023 20:52

Actifed- tablets or syrup. Great for a runny nose.

Nose decongestant spray such as Otrivine (there may well be other brands 😂)

BetsyBloom · 21/11/2023 21:08

Day Nurse Capsules

AnnPerkins · 21/11/2023 21:09

I find Beechams Powders stop the snot

First think in the morning, a clove of raw garlic (crushed between two spoons if you prefer) washed down with a big glass of water. I can feel my sinuses drying up as it goes down my throat.

Prepared to repeat daily for a fortnight. In reality, nose completely tried up in a few days of this treatment.

Good luck.

p.s. fresh parsley to take away the taste /smell.

Is this true? 🤔 I'm not sure whether you're joking or not 😁

No it isn’t!

Try Sudafed Mucus Relief tablets.

FinallyHere · 22/11/2023 04:07

@LeakyPipes

I only wish I were joking. Almost for as long as I could remember, my nose had been runny. I always seemed to be clutching a tissue to mop it up.

The raw garlic cure was recommended a while back. I ignored it for ages then, a few years ago, in desperation looking for a cure, gave it a try.

I get that it's pretty drastic but it is the only thing that ever worked for me. I'm fine now day to day but if I gos ever get a cough/cold, I tend at first put off the raw garlic cure until I'm really made miserably by the runny nose. At some point, I give in and start it up again.

And then wonder why I put it off so long.

Hope it works for anyone who tries it.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 22/11/2023 11:55

Garlic is pretty magic. My mum used to put garlic oil in my ears when I had earache and it worked!

Lottapianos · 22/11/2023 14:17

Update - antihistamines are definitely helping to reduce the snot production. DP has gone to the pharmacy to get either Actifed or Sudafed Mucus Relief so hoping that will make things even better. It's a nasty little big, this one

Thanks all
