Note on car : what happens now?

I work for a university, as is common there are significant problems with parking. When I can't get a space onsite, I usually park outside SILs house which is 20 minutes walk away. However I found a side street 5 minutes closer today.
I came back today (short day) to find this note on my car.

No phone number and no one around, didn't fancy knocking on doors.
I wasn't parked on double yellows, in a disabled bay or blocked anyone in. I was admittedly quite a way on the pavement. Obviously will not park there again and will go to SILs from now on.

What's the worst that can happen here? Parking fine? Thanks.

If you were parked legally - nothing

ollypollymolly · 21/11/2023 15:13

Laugh and throw it in the bin?

reported to who ?

Fantasia99 · 21/11/2023 15:15

To be fair parking on the pavement is a nightmare. When I was in a wheelchair for a few months I ended up having to go on the road or a really long way round.

Hiddenvoice · 21/11/2023 15:15

You’ve probably made it difficult for anyone in a wheelchair or a pram to get passed and made them
walk on the road.

They may have reported your parking to the police or local authority or have just said that to give you a fright.

The council I guess?

Were you parked on the pavement enough that it would be tricky for a push chair or wheelchair user to get past ? I could see how that would make someone write a shitty note .

Peacelily001 · 21/11/2023 15:16

If you were parked up on the pavement, was there enough space for prams, wheelchairs etc to pass?

Yes this sounds plausible.
What about the police so?

Nothing will happen. Chuck it in the bin.

mrlistersgelfbride · 21/11/2023 15:17

*what would the police do?

OP posts:
mrlistersgelfbride · 21/11/2023 15:18

Probably not room for a pram or wheelchair to pass. It isn't a main road.

Why did you choose to park there for your own convenience, knowing you could be obstructing a wheelchair or pram passing?

Absolutely nothing. Ignore it.

Cheepcheepcheep · 21/11/2023 15:19

Parking on the pavement is a really dickish move. I live basically next door to a university and the number of people who think it’s ok for to mount the pavement so as to allow parking on both sides of the road is astounding. Please don’t do it again.

However, nothing will happen. I know this, because I frequently report this sort of parking and get told there’s nothing the council can do unless it’s violating a parking rule.

So now the neighbours have banded together and we’re getting yellow lines on the street, taking away free parking from people because a minority spoil it.

Crikeyisthatthetime · 21/11/2023 15:20

Probably nothing but I'm glad it's made you worry. I have a relative who couldn't get out of her flat for days at a time because she couldn't get her mobility scooter past some selfish sod who had parked on the pavement.

winnieanddaisy · 21/11/2023 15:20

I doubt the police would be interested unless they actually saw you parked in such a way . Even then you would probably be told off if anything . I would just ignore the note it’s not as if it was left by a parking warden .

Thanks. The reason I parked further on the pavement was so it left less of an obstruction on the road - I realise now this sounds silly and was a mistake. Yes I won't do it again- I'll park outside SILs now if I need to and have the extra walk.

Most likely nothing will happen but hopefully you’ll realise that even if it’s not a main road, you shouldn’t be obstructing a pavement.

CatamaranViper · 21/11/2023 15:21

Probably nothing at all tbh OP. They probably took a photos of your car and number plate, left a note in anger and complained about you to their nearest and dearest. Even if they do report it, most people can't get the police to come out for a burglary anymore so they won't be bothered about some inconsiderate parking.

I wouldn't let it put you off parking there, but make sure you don't block a pavement or become a hazard for pedestrians

God that's bad. Yeah I won't do it again

I've parked in a side street (legally) in Belfast a lot. I've been threatened physically on several occasions and my car has also been damaged (dented bonnet and also keyed). I wasn't parked on the pavement or in someone's assigned parking space.

Police did fuck all other than telling me not to park there again because of possible paramilitary involvement. Lovely. You're probably safe enough with your snotty note.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 21/11/2023 15:25

Was there anything in the window like a parking badge for the uni you work at for them to identify? Realistically the uni wouldn't do anything if they were able to ID you.

I thought of that. Yes there is a uni parking permit on my windscreen.

It's all well and good saying you won't do it again, but how did you think it was ok in the first place?

Dickish describes it really well. I've once seen an elderly gentleman topple his scooter sideways and fall into the road hitting his head whilst trying to go down a pavement step because someone had blocked the pavement.

BlueGlassOfDoom · 21/11/2023 15:30

Such selfish behaviour - the only thing you seem bothered about is your own convenience and what might happen to you now, not how you might already have inconvenienced or endangered others, probably more people than the one brave enough to leave the note!

I am sick of seeing my disabled son and his (also disabled) partner have to risk walking into the road because of this type of parking - and sometimes walking on side roads is more dangerous, as motorists use them as rat-runs.
