Note on car : what happens now?

mrlistersgelfbride · 21/11/2023 15:12

I work for a university, as is common there are significant problems with parking. When I can't get a space onsite, I usually park outside SILs house which is 20 minutes walk away. However I found a side street 5 minutes closer today.
I came back today (short day) to find this note on my car.

No phone number and no one around, didn't fancy knocking on doors.
I wasn't parked on double yellows, in a disabled bay or blocked anyone in. I was admittedly quite a way on the pavement. Obviously will not park there again and will go to SILs from now on.

What's the worst that can happen here? Parking fine? Thanks.

Parking on the curb is an offence in London, and you could be fined. Outside of London it’s not specifically an offence, although driving on a pavement is, but you’re very unlikely to be charged.

BigBundleOfFluff · 21/11/2023 17:12

If you had done this in Edinburgh, from January, you would have been given a £100 fine.

Thedm · 21/11/2023 17:14

So you blocked pedestrians from using the pavement? You were parked like a wanker.

ActDottie · 21/11/2023 17:16

Fantasia99 · 21/11/2023 15:15

To be fair parking on the pavement is a nightmare. When I was in a wheelchair for a few months I ended up having to go on the road or a really long way round.

This.

When I had driving lessons my instructor taught be the acronym SCALP. Safe Convenient and Legal Place.

I think of it whenever I am finding somewhere to park and in this instance you inconvenienced someone who maybe was a wheelchair user or had a buggy. For this reason I’d never park on pavement because it’s inconsiderate to others.

OP is aware, has understood and apologised and has said they will never do it again. Why post something like this?

I hate threads like this people people just keep coming at the OP even after they have accepted and apologised. It’s just an excuse to have a go at someone. She gets it, she’s said that, multiple times.

hellywelly3 · 21/11/2023 17:17

It’s a massive issue to wheelchair users when cars park on the pavement. Finding a gap between cars with a drop kerb to get down and another to get back up on the path. It can make it impossible to go places sometimes.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 21/11/2023 17:19

What's the worst that can happen ?
absolutely nothing. Traffic wardens would have to ticket your car while it was parked there. In most towns parking has been decriminalised which means police don't deal and even if they did it would have been left on your car by a PCSO.

Peablockfeathers · 21/11/2023 17:20

OP has acknowledged it was wrong to park obstructing the pavement and has said they now realise this and won't do it again, so why people are finding the need to point this out is baffling.

user1471556818 · 21/11/2023 17:20

Well lesson learnt and you won't park like a prat again .

Baffledandalarmed · 21/11/2023 17:27

mrlistersgelfbride · 21/11/2023 15:16

Yes this sounds plausible.
What about the police so?

I was admittedly quite a way on the pavement.

You were a wanker. Your desire to park closer to work doesn't trump the rights of disabled people or women/men with buggies.

Edit: And the fact you didn't realise it was wanky when you parked like that is pretty baffling.

pacora · 21/11/2023 17:32

Pavement parkers are seriously selfish.

SunsetApple · 21/11/2023 17:34

RoundTheBendThenBackAgain · 21/11/2023 16:35

It was a very selfish thing to do, but you don't sound like you did it out of badness, you just didn't realise. The note was probably from someone pushing a buggy or wheelchair who was either forced to bump it down the kerb and go into traffic or they were forced to turn around if they couldn't do that.

In regards to what will happen. I reported a selfish dickhead who used to do this all the time, forcing people to walk in the road. I took a photo of 3 different occasions of them doing it and a neighbour told me that the person did eventually get a ticket. They may not have reported you though, so maybe nothing will come of it.

Edited

Drivers should realise when they are putting other people at risk though. It’s part of learning how to drive safely and considerately. You wouldn’t deliberately block the pavement with your dustbins so why would you block it with your car? It’s common sense.

2jacqi · 21/11/2023 17:40

@mrlistersgelfbride parking on the pavement is illegal in UK

Princessbananahamock · 21/11/2023 17:40

Read all school run posts about people being blocked in parking on double yellows and really blocking pavements. Jack shit will happen, traffic enforcement would have to catch you in the act. Police won’t do anything ffs you get a reference number for burglary and car theft/damage.

So throw in bin and ignore.

PosteriorPosterity · 21/11/2023 17:42

If you were parked on the pavement, then the note is probably right.

Either park fully on the road, or park somewhere else.

I don’t even have a pram or wheelchair and still think it is hugely annoying when walking my nervous dog and we have to squeeze past cars parked ridiculously on footpaths.

Just be more considerate in future.

maddiemookins16mum · 21/11/2023 17:43

I don’t get the whole parking on the pavement so as to not obstruct the road. There is a road I drive along every day and people park half on the pavement, I still have to wait behind the half on/off the road car if something is coming the other way, as there still isn’t enough room for two cars to pass side by side even with the parked car half on the pavement. Drives me mad (pun intended).

Coffeeebean · 21/11/2023 17:44

Some very nasty replies here.

Sometimes we act without thinking through every single impact of our actions.

OP has acknowledged their mistake and learnt from it.

We are human after all....not perfect...

LlynTegid · 21/11/2023 17:48

Two wrongs don't make a right.

You have acknowledged yours, the other person has not.

MikeRafone · 21/11/2023 17:48

you leave a note on your dash board

I have a photograph of you leaving the note from my dash cam, leaving notes on cars is harassment - leave 2 and I can take it to the police, along with your photograph.

Not everywhere.

funbags3 · 21/11/2023 17:50

Why did you think that parking on a pavement wasn't a dickish move?
Imagine someone got run over because they had to walk around your car.
I doubt you'll get a letter but you should,

Autieangel · 21/11/2023 17:52

You haven't parked illegally so nothing will happen. You can not be fined for parking partially on the pavement.

Whilst it's understandable people are frustrated at people parking on pavements. Some roads literally don't have space for cars to drive down if cars are parked on the road. Yet parking is permitted.

caringcarer · 21/11/2023 18:10

mrlistersgelfbride · 21/11/2023 15:16

Nothing will happen but I wouldn't do it again in case they damage your car.

botheredand · 21/11/2023 18:14

Nothing will happen, but you will learn to be more considerate of those who are less able and rely on pavements to savely leave their homes. A lesson every able person should learn.

LeRougeEtLeNoir · 21/11/2023 18:17

And you’ll have to explain why you can’t be bothered to follow the HighWay code…

Amazing how some people can think about shouting ‘harassement’ without any care for the problem they’d be creating by parking in the pavement.
More entitled than that is hard tbh.
