Could someone tell me please, if I arrive at Manchester Piccadilly on the train can I get the red route tram that goes to Trafford? Any suggestions gratefully received please. Oh, and can you scan your debit card to pay like you do with the tube in London ??

  1. Not directly from Picc, no.

Get on an 'Eccles' tram (blue line)
then swap over at Deansgate Castlefield to a 'Trafford Centre' tram (red line).

You could also walk to Deansgate to get on it but if you don't know the way or it's a crowded time it might take you up to 40'.

  1. I personally still use the ticket machines if I'm on a tram, but the site says contactless cards are fine on their special tap n go readers. Tap in when you get on the first tram at Piccadilly, then tap out with the same card when you get off at your final Trafford stop. One different debit card for each traveller.

I just tap in and out with my card (which is on my phone)

I've not been on the tram from Piccadilly to Altrincham line for a while but I've always just got straight on. Check the Metrolink app

You can also get on the Altrincham line to Deansgate Castlefield and make the same switch. Or you could stay on to Cornbrook and you wouldn't have to change platform.

If you use the ticket machine, you will need to get a zone 1-3 ticket if you are going out to the trafford centre.

Oh you meant to the Trafford Centre. You will have to change at either Deansgate or Castlefield.

It's the Bee Network app now

I was going to clarify. Do you mean Trafford as there is no stop that is 'Trafford' just Old Trafford. As people have stated if this is what you mean get on the tram at Piccadilly for Altrincham. No need to change as it goes direct.

If you mean the Trafford Centre then you do need either the Eccles or Media City lines and then you change at either Deansgate-Castlefield or Cornbrook for the Trafford Centre direct tram.

Sorry, it's the new Wharfside tram stop. Says it's on the red line.

If it's either Old Trafford or the Trafford area (sale/timperley/alteincham) you want the tram to altrincham from Piccadilly. You don't need to change at all
Also you can just tap in & out with your debit card. It's really easy
