I share an office with my manager. I joined the company a few months ago. Get along well with the manager and have great chat. When our colleagues come in, she tends to drop me from the conversation completely. I know the colleagues too and get along with them. But clearly they’ve come in to talk to her (usually to gossip). There have been times they whisper so I can’t hear bits of the story. Or they’ll show each other something funny on their phones and laugh.
Recently a colleague has come in and started a story and then said “Oh I’ll have to tell you the rest… another time” and then the manager says don’t worry we can leave the office to go and talk.
It’s never about work or her role as a manager, it’s just idle gossip about other people.
Do you think it’s rude to exclude people from conversations if you share an office with them?
