Malaphors

Does anyone else find them hilarious or are me and my friend total idiots?

Quite possibly just my idiotic sense of humour but I've been randomly undoing the monotony of work today with a friend of mine who was obviously doing the same.

I particularly like 'You've opened your can of worms, now lie in it'

And 'It's all bathwater under the baby, now'

We also came up with some reverse idioms like 'Where there's brass there's muck' and compound ones 'Just do it, you might get run over by three buses that come along at once, tomorrow' and 'he wouldn't give you the water off his duck's back'.

'You're just biting around the bullet, now' Grin

They have their own subreddit so I am clearly not alone.

Never heard of these and love all of them. I am going to shine a headlight down that rabbit hole later. Thank you!

I am glad you 'get it' @TotalOverhaul!

I like 'dipping your toes in many pies' too

They're very good, love a properly mixed metaphor.
I feel like a malaphor should combine a malapropism- can't think of any offhand though, unfortunately.

Jewelspun · 20/11/2023 17:36

Oh yes! A most apt one for Mumsnet would be to tell another poster to 'put your ducks in one basket'!

CrapGoat · 20/11/2023 21:46

@ErrolTheDragon neither can I!
Put all your ducks in one basket is a good one.

I always want to know the origins of idioms/phrases etc too

Love a good mixed metaphor. There are some great ones here: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/features/the-top-ten-mixed-metaphors-9191302.html

‘When you open that Pandora's box, you will find it full of Trojan horses' 😄
