Thread 11 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Whoops, missed the filling up of the previous thread! (thread 10).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I had a light bulb moment in Morrison's tonight and I bought myself a tube of Primula (with added prawns). My god it was delicious and, yes, I finished the whole tube. Tomorrow I buy some more of it and Boursin which Snoop suggested. It's lovely having cheese again. I'm experiencing cheese joy!🧀

artant · 02/12/2023 23:27

Boursin is an excellent addition to scrambled eggs if you want to combine your cheese joy with scrambled egg joy.

MouseMinge · 02/12/2023 23:44

Oooh! I think that's tomorrow's dinner sorted! Thanks @artant

What a remarkable character Ronnie O'Sullivan is. He must be nearly unique in any sport: someone who is widely accepted to be the greatest player of all time. And now, the youngest ever winner of the UK championship, and also the oldest, thirty years later! Knocking on 50, and still no sign of his powers waning.

That sounds truly mournful, I hope she takes loads of lovely edibles with her and they all get eaten.

We used to have a Christmas family gathering at Mr Veg's uncle's place and he was mean with the heating, though he could easily afford it. It always ended up with the uncle's sister saying 'Your guests are cold, put the heating on!'. There was always loads of food and drink, though, so that was good.

I read the OP and the first few posts. And thought, hmmm...

As did a few other posters, it seems.

@BezMills This thread is so mad. I suspect it's some kind of trojan wotsit to show how feminists are mad and also wonder if it's some TRA mischief

Exactly what I thought.

Evening all, well very late evening but not quite bedtime. I got an appointment to see an oncologist today, quite a lot of preambling by the person calling. Apparently they've sent me a letter - not yet received - with an appointment for 9th January but phoned to tell me they've now got an earlier one for 12th December, next Tuesday. That's good news because if I'd been left to wait until 9th January it's highly likely I would have lost my shit. It's coming to something if cancer referrals are taking that long. Cancer grows, the longer you wait the harder it gets to treat. Anyway, breathe and all that, it's only next week now. I hope treatment starts by the week after at the latest.

I've got some Boursin and will be making scrambled eggs with added Boursin tomorrow. I was going to have it today but couldn't be arsed to do even the smallest amount of cooking today. I did eat some of the Boursin though and it was lovely.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 04/12/2023 22:32

12 December is much better than hanging about waiting until after Xmas.

We've had excellent cancer news here; BiL, who was diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 cancer during lockdown 1 and thought unlikely to make xmas of that year, has just had a scan (and several follow-up 'just making sure' tests) that showed absolutely nothing. Completely gone!

Britinme · 05/12/2023 00:06

That’s excellent news Bint!

artant · 05/12/2023 00:33

Very glad to hear you’re not having to wait til after Christmas @MouseMinge - that would have been awful. There seem to be so many delays now. It’s bad enough when that just leaves people in pain or unable to work but cancer won’t wait.

Excellent BiL news @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn - it’s always good to hear of medical bafflement of a “well where did that go?!” nature.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 05/12/2023 01:29

He has been having a lot of treatment. But they expected 'smaller' at best, and 'slower' as most likely. Gone was a very welcome surprise.

MouseMinge · 05/12/2023 04:38

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn that is bloody fabulous news! Stage 4 as well! I'm so happy for you all.

Kucinghitam · 06/12/2023 10:31

That is very good news @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn! I love a good news cancer story.

Went for our usual early-morning-after-dropping-kids little walk (enjoyed the clear dark skies and beautiful crystalline frost on everything). As we walked past the local row of shops, we realised that somebody had put a brick through the window of a restaurant, whole window shattered basically. Bit of dithering, DH took a couple of photos while I frantically Googled "how to report a crime." I mean, I know the usual "ring 101" thing, but we were wondering if there was a better way that didn't involve shouting down a phone while standing next to a busy road.

After a few frostbitten minutes, we decided the best thing to do was go home into the warmth and do the reporting from there, rather than standing in the cold.

I must say I was quite impressed by the Live Chat function on the police website. It was really quick and easy. The responses indicated an actual human behind them, and one who asked sensible questions about the incident and gave sensible replies in return. They asked me to upload our photos, gave an incident number and assured me that somebody would be sent out to investigate (I didn't ask about timescale, mind you!). And then the whole chat transcript was emailed to me.

Hi Mouse - I have finders and assorted limbs and digits crossed for a good result for you.

I'm feeling a bit low, I've just found out that a youngish guy I used to train has dropped dead, aged 38 / 39. He was a moderate drinker and strongly anti drugs, just into fitness training. I was told that it happened a few weeks ago, but nobody seems to know the cause.

Britinme · 06/12/2023 13:54

Was he a consumer of energy drinks Sinner? I just read an article about the heart risks involved in those. My DS2 drinks those and so does his wife. I sent him a copy of the article but I think it’s likely to be ignored.

VictorianBigot · 06/12/2023 14:33

I'm sorry Sinner, that's awful. It made me think of SADS - sudden arrhythmic death syndrome. I had a heart condition that put me at risk for SADS and was advised against strenuous exercise until I had surgery to correct it. Mine was symptomatic so I was aware of it, but in many people heart conditions (including mine) can be asymptomatic which can have tragic consequences.

Kucinghitam · 06/12/2023 15:39

Sorry to hear about your friend, @SinnerBoy. What a shock that must have been.

Britinme · Today 13:54

Was he a consumer of energy drinks Sinner?

I don't know, to be honest. I hadn't seen him since Covid hit.

VictorianBigot

Oh, sorry to hear that, I'm glad to learn that you were able to have it corrected.

MouseMinge · 06/12/2023 23:39

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, @SinnerBoy . I'm guessing it could well be that heart thing it does seem to take a lot of young people - men especially - who are fit and healthy and do a lot of exercise.

And thank you for all the crossed digits and limbs. I'm having a bit of a meh day. They come and go. I'm just tired of feeling the bloody tumour and associated pain. Not long until the appointment now and I've got a dietician from Worthing hospital coming to visit me on Monday. I appreciate the visit and not having to go myself. It's only just over ten minutes walk but that's enough to leave me breathless and close to fainting at the moment. Actually, thinking about it that's probably why I'm in a bit of a meh mood today. I was grateful for a trolley yesterday in Morrison's because I felt bloody awful and close to fainting. So, yes. Being a weakling is annoying me.
