Things you cannot believe you ate as a child

One of my mother's favourite sandwich fillings- deep fried crumbed lambs brains with iceberg lettuce and salad cream in white bread.

I did eat it a few times until I properly realised what it was- but- [shudder]. Just why?

DH used to love and adore his mother's pureed (pickled!) beetroot in white sauce. Just pureed pink slop surely (I made it for him once).

My Grandma used to make black pudding, and it would be poured into the cleaned out pigs stomach to set. It was absolutely delicious - really tender and peppery. A slice of that, fried up with an egg on top and a slice of fresh baked soda bread with homemade butter and a mug of tea! But sad that I will never get to taste it again - i don't think butchers sell pints of blood and pig stomachs to housewives anymore, and I wouldn't have her recipe written anywhere. I know there was fried onion, barley, mace, loads of white pepper, but wouldn't know where to begin.

I'll have to content myself with soda bread and pudding from the butchers.

Oh God yes my grandma used to give me brains on toast. I actually quite liked it. It would make me vom now.

ilovepixie · 19/11/2023 15:00

We had bread and butter with sugar on top. Only one slice. Couldn't afford another slice to make into a sandwich lol.

Golden syrup sandwiches.
Potted beef (god knows what went into it.)

Loved a syrup sandwich. 🤭

15yo DD adores sugar on toast or crumpets as an after school snack! I don't know where she came across it as it's not something I ever offered her, but she'd eat it every day if I let her.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 19/11/2023 15:40

I can remember Heinz sandwich spread, I still like it - I loved the cucumber spread that is now discontinued (sadly).

I don't remember eating a sugar sandwich but I do fondly recall my own concoction of English mustard sandwiches. I've lost the taste for them now but I did enjoy them back in the day.

I've also been prompted by the pate stories to remember salmon pate that came in a tube. Bright pink it was but delicious. Not seen it for years now.

DH 's favourite meals based on his childhood- rognons sautés Turbigo, calves liver ( usually when eating out as I am not good cooking liver as I make it tough) and whenever he is near a proper butcher he asks for sweetbreads- thymus. I’m from Liverpool and we had Connie onnie sandwiches more than sugar butties. My FIL served in India and swore that Vesta packet curries were the nearest thing to the ones he had in India. Bread and butter in sweetened warm milk was for upset tummies and called slops. cubes of jelly were good for bones. But we’re still here.

Mr Brains faggots
Findus crispy pancakes
Tinned ravioli
Tinned meatballs

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 19/11/2023 16:29

Stannislas... what's a 'Connie onnie' sandwich? I'm intrigued!

IHeartGeneHunt · 19/11/2023 16:37

I still have golden syrup on toast or crumpets when the urge takes me!
I like condensed or evap milk in coffee.

newyeardelurker · 19/11/2023 16:49

Rum butter on bread at my grandmas - butter sugar and rum. Excellent for calming overexcited toddlers down.

bread and gravy the best part of a roast dinner.

dalesteaks.

garlictwist · 19/11/2023 17:00

School dinner - early 90s. One of the desserts we used to have was cornflakes, stewed apple and (cold) custard. Grim.

Ankerdam · 19/11/2023 17:04

Fish food. Literally, the little flakes in a pot.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 19/11/2023 17:07

I used to eat melted chocolate ice cream with vinegar. Please do not ask me why. I enjoyed it.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 19/11/2023 17:10

I was also a very fussy eater (autistic, sensory issues I guess) so my fallback used to be a sandwich of either lettuce or coleslaw on white bread if out of the house. My schoolmates would have dishes of custard for pudding - just custard. I still eat Worcestershire Sauce on rice and pepper on almost anything else.

GasDrivenNun · 19/11/2023 17:14

Dog biscuits

Salmonspines · 19/11/2023 17:15

I had an obsession with eating the spinal cord of salmon …… I loved them and dm would have to buy loads of tins so I could have a bowl full I loved the ones where there was some kind of connective tissue between each little vertebrae and the bony crunch of them

Pasta sprinkled with sugar, nothing else. Mmm, carbs. It’s delicious.

Hmmm that sounds potentially quite edible Grin

enchantedsquirrelwood · 19/11/2023 17:36

Not so much as a child but as a student, packet soups, Beanfeast and Pot Noodles!

I still put crisps in sandwiches at times.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 19/11/2023 17:37

I used to eat salmon paste as a child but now I think tastes disgusting.

mrwalkensir · 19/11/2023 17:42

Sugar on bread is probably better for you than a lot of modern cereals!

anonimoxyz · 19/11/2023 17:45

Tripe 🤢 Only ever had sugar in sandwiches with bananas so they'd be "healthy"

cheapskatemum · 19/11/2023 18:12

Just remembered we used to have tinned mandarins with evaporated milk as a dessert. I used to like it, but can't imagine eating it now & it's not something I ever thought of giving DCs.
