Things you cannot believe you ate as a child

One of my mother's favourite sandwich fillings- deep fried crumbed lambs brains with iceberg lettuce and salad cream in white bread.

I did eat it a few times until I properly realised what it was- but- [shudder]. Just why?

DH used to love and adore his mother's pureed (pickled!) beetroot in white sauce. Just pureed pink slop surely (I made it for him once).

My favourite breakfast was crunchy but cornflakes with squirty cream instead of milk 😳

*crunchy nut cornflakes

Anything like liver, kidneys, tongue 🤢

we used to have oxtail quite often as a cheap option. The meat bit was fine, but having to spend half the meal time getting it off the bone and getting rid of any fat/grizzle before you could eat it turned me right off it.

Turmerictolly · 19/11/2023 11:11

Pigs trotters - yuk, all sticky.
Sugar sandwiches and pure sugar beet to chew on - no wonder I had so many fillings as a kid.

Just remembered being given a stick of rhubarb and a bowl of sugar

Renamed · 19/11/2023 11:20

Lemons with sugar! When there wasn’t any other fruit

funbags3 · 19/11/2023 11:20

Pig hearts. Absolutely adored them.

anyoneanyoneanyone · 19/11/2023 11:21

sugar on toast
dripping sandwiches
raw potatoes
liver
pigs trotters
deep fried pies/frozen sausages in oil that had been standing three years
mouldy stuff

sixteenfurryfeet · 19/11/2023 11:35

Stuffed lamb's hearts.

They tried to get me to eat tripe once. No chance.

AdaColeman · 19/11/2023 11:42

Tapioca (looked like frogspawn) and sago puddings, they had no flavour, but both had a slimy, slippery texture.

On the other hand, I loved offal dishes and still do.

@GonnaGetGoingReturns

Black pudding, stepdad used to like it in a fry up.

Still is regularly in our house - DH and eldest DS love it. I have never eaten it.

After he told us what it was made of we almost puked but as kids you want to try anything.

Beamur · 19/11/2023 11:50

We ate a lot of offal. I used to really enjoy stuffed heart and liver and bacon but probably wouldn't eat it now. Drew the line at brawn (brain) and tongue.
Tinned potato salad isn't nice though. Happy never to eat that again.
Grandparents also very keen on frozen individual mousse puddings - supermousse I think they were called. Ate a lot of those.
Dripping on toast with extra salt is delicious but I wouldn't eat it now.
My Mum often made this horrible pudding with a pre-made sponge case, filled with tinned mandarins and topped with gelatine. Not even nice back then..

IHeartGeneHunt · 19/11/2023 11:55

Oh yes rhubarb and sugar! Lovely.
If I wasn't vegetarian I'd still be eating a lot of the meat mentioned here, I enjoyed it when I was younger.

delphi13 · 19/11/2023 12:21

Buttons, not the chocolate variety. I used to steal them out of the button box in my mums sewing kit. I cannot think why I did this now.

augustusglupe · 19/11/2023 12:25

MintJulia · 19/11/2023 06:39

@augustusglupe I saw a recipe for slow cooked tripe in tomatoes & herbs yesterday in a trendy foodies magazine. Very fashionable apparently, so you may get the chance to stroll down memory lane. 😀

Oh thanks, mmmmm… 😄

TheChosenTwo · 19/11/2023 06:43

Deed fried lamb brain sandwiches has turned my stomach. As has everything poor @augustusglupe ate during childhood!!
mine wasn’t anywhere near as bad as those but it’s just readymeals.
my mum worked 2 jobs when we we’re young, used to come home between them both and ping something in the microwave for us and go back out to work. It was always revolting slop. Sometimes if she had more time it would be something freezer to oven which at least meant it wouldn’t be sloppy food with any luck and there would be chips!

Ah thanks 😄 I enjoyed it at the time, especially Tripe and onions with mash. At least mum cooked ours, Dad used to have his raw, with a little salt, pepper and vinegar 🤢

MumofSpud what is wrong with Scotch pies ?

Indeed. I had one at the football yesterday.

Surprised to see this on this thread.

WeeSleekitCowrinTimrousBeastie · 19/11/2023 13:18

So many foods on this thread still eaten in our house.

Crochetpenguin · 19/11/2023 13:27

Raw jelly.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 19/11/2023 13:29

Boiled gammon and carrots with white sauce. Utterly disgusting (and to be fair made me gag then let alone now.)

JamJarson · 19/11/2023 13:30

Toblerones (until one day I was sick on them).

oily, greasy spam fritters gah! - school dinners!

JamJarson · 19/11/2023 13:33

picturethispatsy · 19/11/2023 09:37

It’s very telling they many of us are more disgusted by offal, animal fat and butter than the UPF food we have in abundance today.

We have become so detached from real food! If you eat meat then it’s only right you should eat nose to tail. The issue is in the way it’s prepared. Don’t think many of our parents back in the day were serving up in a delicious way sadly.

I agree! I actually liked liver and kidneys and oxtail soup is delicious. People turn their noses up at that - delicious and healthy in my book - but will eat chocolate coco pops or a box of Pringles!

shellyleppard · 19/11/2023 13:37

My mum used to poach smoked haddock in milk 🤢🤢🤢 still can't stand smoked fish. Also ate quite a few sugar sandwiches..... yummy!!! ❤️ Her best dish was stovie tatties

xanthippe8 · 19/11/2023 13:38

I still eat a lot of foods mentioned on this thread too. I gave liver a swerve for years, but later realised that was because my parents overcooked it, I love it now!

We used to have Fray bentos pies sometimes, just the one between five of us (two adults and three children), no wonder we were all so skinny!

DrCoconut · 19/11/2023 13:43

Birds apeel. It was some kind of instant orange juice. i don't remember it properly. i remember a standard school pack up being paste sandwich on white bread, crisps, penguin bar and ribena " ready to drink" carton. No one was horrified by this.

That doesn't sound as though the Oxtail had been cooked for long enough, as if you leave it until it's properly done (slowcooker - or pressure cook), the meat completely separates from the bones.

Just bought a large multicooker (to replace the SC that cracked) and Oxtail with beans, Scotch Bonnet, Thyme and Spring Onion - is top of the list of things to make.
