Freestanding Gas Cooker 2023!

RubyRedd · 17/11/2023 14:18

My lovely old … and I mean old … Parkinson Cowan gas cooker needs replacing. After 30+ faithful years she must be put out to pasture, but trying to find a replacement is a bummer.
I’m looking for a cooker with a separate grill, preferable gas, and a double oven. Has anyone bought a gas cooker recently or can recommend any brands? I’ve been researching for a while now but nothing beats a personal recommendation.
Looking to spend under £500 and as space is limited in a council flat, it needs to be maximum 60cm width.
Any and all replied welcome. Thanks

Mine is similar to this
Hotpoint Cannon 60cm Double Oven Gas Cooker - Stainless Steel CD67G0CCX | Appliances Direct

(I hope the link will work). I've only had it a couple of months but I'm pleased with it so far. The grill is in the top of the oven though. It replaced a 40-year-old one with an eye-level grill.

I was surprised to find it needs a bit of pre-heating though - my old one didn't need that! But it does cook well. The salesman warned me not to expect this one to last 40 years, though 😁

P.S. Mine is cream because I desperately wanted a slightly "pretty" one 🙂

Talipesmum · 17/11/2023 14:54

OP do you mean one with an eye level grill?

Sorry OP, no gas cookers are made with eye level grills nowadays. Five years ago, I spent weeks seaching and ended up with a gas hob and electric ovens. DH still mourns for his eye level grill... so much easier for a tall person!

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 17/11/2023 15:33

Our model wouldn't suit you, but I love my Belling.

Gas hob, and main oven, second oven is hob and doubles as an electric grill. And we switched from an eye level grill on a maybe 40 year old cooker.

Talipesmum · 17/11/2023 15:38

I think your best bet would be a decent gas hob double oven, and get one where the electric grill heats up very quickly. We have a stoves oven I really like but it’s too wide for you. I still mourn the loss of eye level grills but frankly you’ll get a much better option if you choose from one where there’s a lot more choice. Look for a fast heating up grill part, and you’ll be fine.

Yes it’s weird now, so hard to find an eye level grill!! I have to crawl around on the floor or double bend to see some dark inner grill now 😡

Talipesmum · 17/11/2023 15:45

I looked on which, and hotpoint, bush and indesit seem to be the best ones for double oven gas under £500. This one has the best reviews under £500 and they say the grill is fantastic:

They do still make cookers with eye level grills. I mean, they’re as basic as anything and you probably wouldn’t find one in the kitchen of anyone who took cooking seriously, but they definitely still make them. The link below is for an electric one, simply because it was the first place I looked, but I’ve bought a gas version for my mum in the last year. They last forever.

This is the one we have as well (or something very similar) - inherited when we bought our house, but was only a year old. It seems fine and will do us very well until we get to redo our kitchen.

RubyRedd · 18/11/2023 12:38

Thank you all for your speedy replies! I just found a picture of my old cooker online after a bit of searching. Not sure if it was a double oven as the top was just a grill … with a proper grill pan, I think some of them don’t have them these days

@Missingthesea: The link works perfectly. I think this is one of the cookers I looked at briefly as it seems that Cannon is one of the better makes. I can live with a bit of pre-heating as I will only use it for roasting and heating. I made a vow years ago NEVER to learn to bake, as I will be at least 80 stones within a week!!

@Talipesmum: Thanks for looking on Which, I’ll investigate the one in the link

@Talipesmum @Papyrophile @ Nagado @ Jampete: The grill was where the top oven usually is 😀

@casuarinatree: Good to know there is another recommendation for this make

Now for the unenviable task of also searching for a fridge freezer and a washing machine. Luckily there are a lot of recommendations from previous Mumsnet threads – it was just the cooker I was unsure of

Ah in that case OP you’ll be just fine. The top oven part very commonly has a grill in there - take a look at reviews though as sometimes the grill pan they give you is teeny tiny, and sometimes it’s great. We had an old electric oven when we moved in to this house and the top electric grill was sooo awful and slow, but our newer stoves one has an electric oven and grill with gas hob, and the grill is fantastic - large and speedy. Good luck with the reviews and searching!

@Talipesmum: Thanks 😊. I’m a few hours into my 'Marpling' and have a few more to go. This is what I call my research on anything – after Mrs Marple – as I ‘Marple’ the hell out of everything

Love it! I’m the same!

Papyrophile · 18/11/2023 20:20

It is, apparently, a kitchen fashion issue. Eye level grills interrupt a sleek streamlined run of counters and units. We investigated the possibility of a professional salamander grill, but it was so ugly we returned it. They are purely for commercial kitchens!

RubyRedd · 20/11/2023 12:36

I've just seen the salamander grill and it doesn't look too pretty! I can see now why eye level grills will suit taller people – a problem that I don’t have
