Please help with my toe

Sorry my feet aren't nice.
Is this fungal ??
If you can see properly underneath the cuticle has what I can't only describe as a growth of hard skin/nail. I think it's fungal, my other big toe nail was like this but it eventually righted itself and is normal now, this one though is still like this and doesn't even grow !! My toe aches aswell now if I mess with it

Hard to tell. Could be just you need a bit more regular maintenance. Keep them trimmed and files and remove dead skin. If your other one looked the same but righted itself I'd doubt fungal.

CesareBorgia · 16/11/2023 18:59

It looks like an ingrown toenail that's infected.

mankytoes · 16/11/2023 19:05

Well it doesn't even grow and trying to cut it it's hard as it's really thickened, it crumbles too, that's why I thought fungal as lines also appeared on both the nails going straight across like splits, but it's weird the other one is normal now !
It's bloody horrible, when in the bath the cuticle goes all soft 🤢

I would take that to the GP.

I would take that to the GP.

Do you think it needs medical attention ? I'm pregnant atm so not sure what can even be done right now but it's not getting any better

mankytoes · 16/11/2023 19:25

Oh god worrying it's a tumour now

Any chiropodists around ?? My toe is really aching since messing with it taking those pictures

OP posts:
Chewbecca · 16/11/2023 19:53

I would just make a routine chiropodist appointment, get them cut straight and tidied up. They will advise if any medication is needed and I would ask for advice on how to keep them healthy.

mankytoes · 16/11/2023 20:12

I think I'll get a gp to have a look first as I don't think the aching is normal

It looks to me like there's a second toe nail trying to grow on top of the original one, but I've no idea if that's actually a thing. What does it look like with no nail polish on?

That's what dh said too.
Well initially it was slightly yellow, then went normal coloured and has lines going across the nail, almost like cracks

Found a pic of them without the paint on.

Hello again, I didn't realise you had polish on them. I was concerned by such a dark nail as I've had chemo nails that went black and fell off but not with normal runners nails or fungal. Yours look like regular fungal. I'm going to hazard a guess that as pregnant there is not a prescription that will be ok at the moment. In the meantime, I'd file them all over, apply Viks (the cold stuff) daily or tea tree oil and keep with the filing and applying. You could try so Daktarin too. It's a bloody nuisance. I had lovely nails until I married somebody who didn't and have had problems since. Weirdly getting cancer, losing my nails during and after treatment cured it. Obviously that's extreme but I'd try and treat it topically for now (and while it's winter and no feet on display) and then reassess post birth. I still think it's worth seeing GP if it's hurting you. You need to make sure nothing is ingrowing or there is no infection.

SerCrispin · 16/11/2023 21:09

It looks like the nail is trying to shed?
I currently have the same middle growth between cuticle and nail but I cut it away and hope it stops.
You haven't had any operations recently have you?

KievLoverTwo · 17/11/2023 04:26

That's a fungal nail infection. Just get some of the stuff you file the nail down with and polish once a week. Be regimented and don't forget. Do it for the full amount of time it says.

As it looks quite advanced you may have to do it for several winters running (usually gets better in spring and summer).

If it hurts it's probably because the nail is so thick that you are getting pressure from your shoes pressing down on them.

junbean · 17/11/2023 04:32

An injured nail will get dry and flaky like that. I dropped something really heavy on my toe years ago and it acted the same way for a long time. I'm not sure what happened to yours but it sounds injured in some way (like an ingrown maybe) and probably infected. I'd have it seen as aching badly after just touching it is really abnormal.

whateveryouwantmetosay · 17/11/2023 05:10

I took my DD (15) to a podiatrist in the summer as her big toe looked the same and he said while it may have initially been an infection (there was puss), that had passed and there was nothing to worry about. He did ask about her shoes maybe being too small or her injuring that toe and suggested one of those two things being the likely cause. She hasn't complained since so it must have been 🤷‍♀️

Alopeciabop · 17/11/2023 07:55

i had none growing nails and the ridges and to get them started growing again I read somewhere or was told by some random to start massaging them forward.. like with some oil kinda rubbing forward as if willing the nail out. It worked. Hadn’t grown for about a year and this started it up again within the month. Hurt a like it was bruised the whole time (since the problem started not just the massaging) - still does a bit today and seemingly all fine no problem X-ray clear. Toes are odd sensitive creatures

Alopeciabop · 17/11/2023 07:56

Sacrifice the nail varnish though that. Won’t be helping iffungal

margotrose · 17/11/2023 07:59

I agree it looks like a fungal infection - GP or podiatrist is your best bet.

LabradorMama · 17/11/2023 08:03

You’ve got new toenails growing at the bottom there. Same happened to me a few years ago, it was extremely painful and came with pus and then bleeding. Podiatrist said it usually follows some kind of trauma to the nails, though I definitely hadn’t had any. Poor you, I remember the pain well, even the bedsheets resting on them hurt!

TheLonelyGoatTurd · 17/11/2023 09:18

A podiatrist would be the best port of call, OP. That definitely looks like some nail growing up from the nail bed. Owwww.

TheLonelyGoatTurd · 20/11/2023 15:58

How’s the hoof of doom, @mankytoes ?
