Christmas lights for outside

I never put Christmas lights outside the house before. This year I am interested in putting up some Christmas lights outside. I am interested in using battery lights.

How do people hang lights outside?

I don't feel like climbing up high to gutters. I would like lights around windows and doors.
Or do I hang lights around on the outside trees and bushes?

What kind of lights would be good? String lights or rope lights?

Any ideas.
Thanks

I'd stick to mains powered (with the transformer inside) rather than battery powered for outdoor lights!

Trees and bushes always look good with lights (just check it's not home to any local wildlife otherwise you'll be lighting them all up!). Rope lights work best in trees / bushes because they don't have dangling parts to get tangled and it's a smooth rope. You can get super long ones that cover quite a large area!

Around doors / windows I use string lights and outdoor command hooks, the hooks are fab and are three years deep at the oldest part. Super easy just to clip string lights into them and the effect is really pretty.

I use mains powered which I run out of our bedroom window.
one set, which is a long length folded up goes around our porch. I then have two long lengths I weave through the hedge from opposite ends and around the living room window. All warm white lights which I set to twinkle.
