If you've lost an entire fingernail how long did it take to grow back and when did it stop feeling so tender? Thanks

Not me, but my then almost 4yo got his finger shut in the car boot. It went black and bulged and then came off after about 6 weeks I think. He didn't complain of pain after the first 24-48 hours though, and not at all when it was detaching. Hope you feel better soon!

My daughter did. It sort of hardened a bit quite quickly I remember and didn't look so raw and sore for long. A day or two. She said it didn't hurt anymore.

It still didn't look right until the new nail grew in and that took weeks but it wasn't as horrendous as I thought it would be.

I lost all of them to a horrific fungal infection I got doing my own gel nails years ago. The g nails leaked and the fungal spores grew under them. Then they started falling off one by one.
Do you have any idea how impossible it is doing anything without fingernails?.
My GP prescribed a strong oral anti fungal terminating. The nails grew back ok and quite fast I think about 2 months. I was really lucky.
The nail should grow back ok but if its painful buy some flamingo and cover with a plaster.

Not terminating ffs. Terbinafine.

Yes, I got an infection under one of mine which swelled and dislodged the nail from underneath (in a spectacular fountain of grossness) it came away from the base so I had the top half still attached but not the bottom. Then the whole thing came off. And regrew. It took about four months before the finger looked normal but I wore a dressing on it the whole time. I’d say 2-3 weeks before it wasn’t as tender but it depends on the reason you lost it.

I lost my finger nail in March when I trapped it in a car door. It’s just about grown back properly and I will cut it with my other nails again now. I actually wore a plaster on that finger constantly for the first few months, apart from while in bed, to protect it and stop myself knocking it (which hurt). I also have a café, so it didn’t look nice uncovered anyway (not that a blue catering plaster does either!!).

crazyivy · 15/11/2023 22:13

all of them through chemo, some months.

Zampa · 15/11/2023 22:15

I slammed my finger in a door around the age of 11 and the GP had to remove my finger nail. It grew back a different shape!

I don't remember it being particularly sore or tender when it was growing back. Looked weird though!

I'm guessing it took 3 months to grow back but I can't really remember.

Teenage daughter lost one of hers about 2 months ago, felt less painful after a few weeks, 2 months on is about 50% grown back

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 15/11/2023 22:18

Not a fingernail but I’ve lost a few toenails including my big toe one when I got a base of nail blister. It grew back eventually but took a while. I just put plasters on it when it was sensitive.

Oh bloody hell auto correct.......flaminal

hellosolly · 15/11/2023 22:23

Yes. Closed a heavy door on it. It hurt like mad for several days (blood under nail). Because it was so sore, I bandaged it up every day to remind me to be careful of it. After several weeks it started to get a bit loose, so the dressing was even more important to stop it catching in things. After about 4 months it fell off, and a v v v short baby nail was underneath. I kept bandaging it every day because it was quite tender u til the new nail grew up to the top of the finger. Sympathy!!!

gotomomo · 15/11/2023 22:25

About 3 months until I couldn't tell

henrysugar12 · 16/11/2023 00:24

I lost a toenail after dropping a stool on my big toe. Luckily it grew back completely normally, but it was painful when it was bruised and ready to fall off.

notnowdennis · 16/11/2023 00:29

Yep, me!

caught it in a car door. Had to burn a hole through the nail with a paperclip because of the pressie and swelling, and a jet of blood went flying! Totally grim. Lost the nail and it’s never grown back. Fortunately it’s little finger so less obvious.
