Soup makers - Worth it?

In the winter months I love having a hot soup for dinner. I usually just throw a load of veg and a stock cube in a pot and blitz it.

Tell me why love your soup maker so I can justify another gadget!

Can i make lentil soup quickly in a soup maker? I just want to chuck everything in and leave it

Yes

I have the Aldi one. I just throw in the ingredients and set to either chunky or smooth and its done in 20-30 min. Rinse and wipe clean.

Some purists might talk about sweating veg first. But I never have.

AutumnBride · 16/11/2023 16:46

I use my instant pot for soup, you can sauté and cook in one pan and it's really quick, you have to blend but I'd rather have a stick blender than another big gadget.

I don't mind sautéing nand sweating vegetables in a pan first then using soup maker.

It keeps it hit and the smooth function is excellent

That's what I said and why I didn't want one. I regularly eat my words now, along with a bowl of delicious soup maker soup.😂

Edited

I'm exactly the same. Didn't want a soup maker, as I always just made it in a pan and blended it. But then I got given a soup maker for Christmas, and it's so much better! Just chuck things in, roughly chopped, and leave it to do its thing. It blends it better, you can pre-fry onions etc with mine, you can just walk away while it works. It's amazing, and I love it. I eat so much more soup now. Plus my DH will make often make soup now, so that's less work for me!

My own opinions about soup makers aside, a friend had one and said that you have to make soup to the exact recipe, because not enough liquid and you end up with claggy soup, too much liquid and it’s too watery.

And you can’t mess with the flavours at all.

I suspect those who have used soup makers for years have forgotten what decent soup tastes like because of the ease of the soupmaker.

But in truth a soupmaker is just a kettle with an attached blender.

What a lot of rubbish. I've never had a problem with this, just chuck stuff in and add stock. No recipe needed! You can, of course, follow a recipe if you want, but there's no need.

Why can't you mess with the flavours? You can experiment with soup makers, just as you can with making soup in in a pan.

You can definitely make decent soup in a soup maker.

Furjam · 17/11/2023 15:35

I have also been told you can’t really do subtle flavours or add things mid-cooking.

Anyway the one I bought (Ninja and expensive) wouldn’t even mash up the chickpeas a bit. So for me it’s a “no”.

BoilingHotand50something · 17/11/2023 16:09

My Ninja can definitely mash up chickpeas. You can also open the top to add flavours unless it’s about to blend but it gives you a beep as warning. Maybe yours was faulty?

@blackoverbillsmothers thanks! Is it the one that also does sauté?

I've been trying to look up product details online but it's not always clear about the keep warm function.

Yes. It has the sauté function. If you ring Morphy Richards they have a great customer service department. They will answer any questions you have. They don’t push you to buy from them either but if you do you might get a longer guarantee than offered elsewhere. Not sure how their prices compare with Amazon.

Seems totally pointless to me. And soup tastes nicer when you fry onions/garlic/veg first. it's so quick to make-just make a big batch and freeze.

I was wondering about this.

alloutofcareunits · 17/11/2023 19:33

I've just ordered the sauté one from Amazon, it was £25 cheaper than when I looked yesterday

I was wondering about this.

My Morphy Richard has saute setting, so veg gets fried first in the pot. I made broccoli and stilton last week. Enough for lunch for DH and I, lunch for me next day and a portion in the freezer.
