Soup makers - Worth it?

TropDrôle · 15/11/2023 16:13

In the winter months I love having a hot soup for dinner. I usually just throw a load of veg and a stock cube in a pot and blitz it.

Tell me why love your soup maker so I can justify another gadget!

I use the Instant Pot and my Bamix stick blender, I sauté, pressure cook then walk away and leave it until I want to blend and serve. It will automatically go onto "keep warm" after it's finished cooking and I can make a bigger quantity to keep in the fridge/freezer.

Do they always have to blend or is it optional? I quite like a chunky soup.

Eta, yes, I could do that in a saucepan but in that case I'd do all soups in a saucepan and not bother with another gadget.

Edited

You dont have to stand there holding a stick blender chasing lumps around the pan and spraying the walls and surfaces.

A lot of marketer’s dreams on here.

Ultimately if you have a a saute function you have to do exactly the same as you would in a pan, and saute the veg first and then add the stock etc o might as well save space and money and use a saucepan.

And surely no-one would think that it was a good idea to just tip a load of ingredients into a pan, switch on the hob and boil the lot until you were ready to blend them, so I find the idea that people think it’s ok to do it with a gadget baffling.

Lol that's exactly how I'd make soup if I were going to do it in a pan 😂

I am a recent convert to a soup maker, carrot and coriander or mushroom soup most weeks, tip is to use 2x stock cubes and a potato regardless of the recipe. Also use it to make a smooth tomato sauce for pasta in 5 mins.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/11/2023 18:54

I bought a Morphy Richard Saute&Soup when it was 50% off .

I love it for random leftover vegetables soup.
Chilli tomato
Carrot &Coriander

I always have some frozen roast potatoes leftover from Sunday and I cook a load of chopped onions in the oven then frozen in small tubs - so we have them for rice etc.

Marigold vegetable bouillan (low salt one)

The slow cooker makes a nice vegetable stew but doesn't turnout like soup.
I thought it'd be hot vegetable water but it's bloody lush Grin

Morphy Richards soupmake here, just about to have a bowl of broccoli and Stilton!
We love it, gets used a lot at this time of year.

Could someone share some tips and recipes? I feel like I’m doing something wrong.

What do you think is wrong, taste or texture?

Furjam · 16/11/2023 07:27

I found it a waste of money and hard to clean.

Also, tended to make it too smooth or overcooked. Not much sense of control.

Soup is just ingredients in a pan and simmer. I don’t see the point of a soup gadget.

Taste mainly.

itsgettingweird · 16/11/2023 07:32

I love mine!

I make soup but also sauce for bolangese and pasta etc.

itsgettingweird · 16/11/2023 07:33

I also have a sauté and soup one.

RedRobyn2021 · 16/11/2023 07:34

My mum has one and she uses it all the time. I guess there is less washing up and you can leave it unattended.

bruffin · 16/11/2023 07:45

Are you using strong enough stock or enough seasoning

MayThe4th · 16/11/2023 08:40

My own opinions about soup makers aside, a friend had one and said that you have to make soup to the exact recipe, because not enough liquid and you end up with claggy soup, too much liquid and it’s too watery.

And you can’t mess with the flavours at all.

I suspect those who have used soup makers for years have forgotten what decent soup tastes like because of the ease of the soupmaker.

But in truth a soupmaker is just a kettle with an attached blender.

Thats nonsense. I have not had mine for that long but i dont necessarily follow recipes now and soups come out just as nice as when i made them on the hob, just a lot less hassle.
The only soup i dont make in the soup maker is Avolegmo (old family recipe) because the pit not big enough and it doesnt need blending.

OldTinHat · 16/11/2023 08:54

I love my soup maker. It keeps bits in the middle that don't blend, so you can have chunky soup. Using a stick blender means a puree consistency every time.

Can i make lentil soup quickly in a soup maker? I just want to chuck everything in and leave it

Red lentils yes, definitely, not tried others particularly.

A spiced carrot and lentil is one of my staples in mine.

MadKittenWoman · 16/11/2023 10:07

Great gadgets. Just chuck stuff in, press the button and the soup's ready 20 mins later!

PenelopeTheShroudWeaver · 16/11/2023 12:14

For those who do have a soup maker, how long does the soup stay warm for once the programme is finished?

blackoverbillsmothers · 16/11/2023 12:32

Mine has a ‘stay warm’ facility so as long as you want. Morphy Richards.

BoilingHotand50something · 16/11/2023 12:47

I have the Ninja and have been using it every work day for pretty much the last 3 months. It chops the onion and anything else you want chopped up small. Then put it on sauté. Chuck in veg and stock and whatever else you want in - no measuring or recipe required. Choose smooth or chunky. Press start. Go off and do some work. Come back 30 minutes to soup. Keeps warm for 30 minutes but you can always chuck it back on cook to zap it if you got waylaid on a work call etc. Eat delicious soup. Rinse lid and jug. Put in water and washing up liquid. Press clean. Done.

PenelopeTheShroudWeaver · 16/11/2023 14:14

@blackoverbillsmothers thanks! Is it the one that also does sauté?

I've been trying to look up product details online but it's not always clear about the keep warm function
