You may be preventing a fucking divorce here, so please help by answering this question -

Question: If I said "It's milder today than it was yesterday", would you take that to mean:
A: Its warmer than it was yesterday
B: Its colder than yesterday

Very many thanks!

Hhmmm.

If it had been cold, and someone said it's milder today I'd think warmer.

If it had been cold, and someone said it's milder today I'd think cooler.

Glad you've cleared that up then 🤔😂

Colder

CurlewKate · 15/11/2023 13:48

Warmer. But mild to me also means that it's a "gentle" day. Calm, soft, no wind.

Katbum · 15/11/2023 13:50

Depends what the weather was like the previous day tbh (like if it was harsh and snowing out milder would mean warmer/if it’s scorching milder means colder - ie: more bearable). But in general, colder.

Pipsquiggle · 15/11/2023 13:50

milder = less severe.

As we are in winter and the weather yesterday was awful, it means warmer

HOWEVER

If we were in summer and it was 36 degrees yesterday and today was 25 degrees, milder would mean cooler.

The key word in this question is 'yesterday'

Show him this OP.

Pinkchairs · 15/11/2023 13:51

i would think warmer, but also could be cooler.

but I can see his point of view as when you have a curry. A mild curry is less hot. But I think it more means that less intense.

If it was really hot, and the next day was cooler, you could oh it’s milder today. As it’s less intense.

if that makes sense.

though I usually wrong 😂

'His family are insane'

What? Every single one of them? Is he the only one who happened to be normal?

2jacqi · 15/11/2023 13:52

me thinks you have solved your chrismas present problem for him!!!! get this engraved on a plaque for him!! FAILING THAT, BUY HIM A DICTIONARY!!

mild

  1. amiably gentle or temperate in feeling or behavior toward others.
  2. characterized by or showing such gentleness, as manners or speech:a mild voice
  3. not cold, severe, or extreme, as air or weather: mild breezes.

4 .not sharp, pungent, or strong: a mild flavor

EversoDisorganised · 15/11/2023 13:53

I'd use it for both depending on the day before, if that was a scorcher then today would be milder.

BlueEyedPeanut · 15/11/2023 13:53

What do you say when it is colder?

Milder to me means cooler. Like spice. Hot, medium, mild. Something milder means it is more mild than mild = less hot.

Just say it's warmer or cooler than yesterday!

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/11/2023 13:54

Your soon-to-be ex is bonkers! Mild, in the context of weather, means not as cool, ie warmer, than it has been.

I can't imagine ever using milder to mean less hot in the UK. I can imagine it in Arizona or the Sahara but even in a heatwave in the UK I haven't heard people wish for milder weather as we don't usually describe our heat as 'harsh'.

Milder can mean less hot when referring to curry/chilli but it's almost always used to mean 'less cold'.

Abra1t · 15/11/2023 13:58

He needs to read more. Preferably detective novels set in Hampshire, as per above poster. Extend his vocabulary.

DottyLottieLou · 15/11/2023 14:01

Not as extreme. So if it was very cold it means warmer, if it was very hot it means cooler.

Nandos isn't the place to be sourcing your vocabulary.

Loveandloveandlove · 15/11/2023 14:03

100% warmer

SandwichDog · 15/11/2023 14:03

I was all ready to give him the benefit of the doubt if he grew up in a hot climate due to 'mild' meaning "less severe" and what might be taken to be the standard temperature there!

But no.

He is simply a fucknugget.

😅

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 15/11/2023 12:40

It would depend on the weather yesterday

If yesterday was freezing it means it's warmer, if yesterday was a scorcher it means it's cooler

Yes this
My initial thought was warmer, particularly in relation to weather
but I can see how cooler can be correct in some contexts -it depends what the original comparative was.

If the first curry was hot then "this curry is milder than the first one" milder wouldn't mean warmer in that context.

"Their temper/behaviour is a bit milder today" would also usually mean less extreme than yesterday's (hot) temper etc.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 15/11/2023 14:05

Warmer.

Vitriolinsanity · 15/11/2023 14:05

Warmer

DisforDarkChocolate · 15/11/2023 14:05

A

Why would you think B??
