I know the weather will be poor but Carnival will be on, and I thought it might be fun. Anyone been?

The weather is often beautiful at Carnival time- cold and clear, with lovely blue skies. Not always, mind you!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/11/2023 20:27

Yes, we went in the February half term a few years ago. The weather wasn't too bad and it wasn't overcrowded, thoroughly enjoyed it. Much better a bit of rain and cool than too hot for urban sightseeing in our book.

It wasn't Carnival though, I don't know if that makes it packed.

Decembersunset · 14/11/2023 20:30

I went to Venice in February, it was a nice experience! maybe a good idea to take a pair of wellies as it can get flooded. It was quite sunny actually, I remember we went to Murano and Burano , very picturesque.

Tiggles · 14/11/2023 20:32

Yes
We went for carnival just before covid.
The weather was great. We loved it.

Diverpanda · 14/11/2023 20:35

I have! It's so much nicer than full on hot summer.

crackofdoom · 14/11/2023 20:36

You probably won't get the floods any more, now that the Mose sea barriers are finally up and running.
(Secretly sad- I used to love the aqua alta)

Crazykatie · 14/11/2023 20:40

Be prepared for variable weather it will probably be better than high season, if it’s hot and crowded it can be very unpleasant with literally nowhere to sit down unless you are paying stupid prices for everything.

Paperbagsaremine · 14/11/2023 20:40

Yes - cold and wet but not much in the way of crowds! Didn't regret it.

Dowtcha · 14/11/2023 21:56

Fantastic, thanks everyone, that's good to hear

Yes it was amazing. No crowds no queues. You have to look further for a choice restaurant as the very central ones were closed when we went but we followed some Italians and found a real gem of a place tucked away, it was a wonderful trip 🥰

GirrlCrush · 15/11/2023 08:05

What about beginning of December?

We booked a trip without much thought, just fancied it!

margotrose · 15/11/2023 08:07

Yes - it was quiet but absolutely bloody freezing. I wouldn't do it again tbh.

OnLockdown · 15/11/2023 08:12

I've been at Carnival time. The weather wasn't a problem but the crowds were. It was absolutely packed everywhere. Sometimes I just got carried along by the crowd as it was impossible to gobin a different direction to the flow!

Oh dear, don't like the sound of that

It does get very busy for Carnival. Make sure you take lots of layers, warm coat, gloves etc. It can feel very cold.

Jaxhog · 16/11/2023 10:51

We've also been at the time of the Carnival, and it was packed! But it was also very atmospheric and a lot of fun. Watch out for overcrowded boats though. We stayed on the Lido where we could escape the crowds.

If you go in Feb outside of the Carnival, lots of places will be closed.

Really? I don't remember anything being closed.

I’ve been at end of feb/start of March. It was lovely and I found it really cheap. Other than a couple of meals that we’d planned and knew would be expensive we stopped at little cafes for pizza and spritz for a few euros. It wasn’t carnival though.

Beat me to it! Top tip, if you see a little figure in a red duffle coat, go very fast in the opposite direction.

notahincheratall · 16/11/2023 19:01

I went in Jan it was fab

Bostonbakedbeans · 16/11/2023 19:01

Packed, cold (so wear warm layers) and if there's a high tide due at Carnival take your wellies!

SparklyIron · 16/11/2023 19:03

I’ve been in January and November and it’s a great time to go - much less crowded than summer but still nice and temperate compared to UK.

Dowtcha · 16/11/2023 22:04

Thanks, it's for mid term (Ireland) so no real choice of dates. Think we'll risk it.
