MIL is late 70s, living in a care home following 2 strokes as a result of chemo.
Her tumour is now deemed inoperable and she is on an end of life care package, she is bedridden, eats very little and gets very tired from even a conversation or a short visit.
She has been affected on the left side by the strokes, the main symptom is a loss of the visual field on the left side. She describes it as being able to only see half the screen. She will often not realise someone or something is on that side of her. Covering one eye makes no difference, the visual field seems gone. Turning her head is hard work for her.
Prior to this she wore varifocals since she was a young woman, and apparently had the start of cataracts when she went to the optician about 12 months ago.

FIL wants to try and get her to see an optician because she is getting so upset and frustrated about not being able to see the tv, pictures, phone etc. The earliest anyone can visit is in the new year as she would not be able to go to them. Is there really anything that an optician could do to help the situation though? It feels like it’s a brain issue rather than an eye issue?
The physiotherapy team at the hospital are no longer involved as her prospects for any recovery were deemed too small.
I don’t really know what to suggest to FIL anymore, if it might help her we can try to get her out to an optician but this would be a major challenge with all her care needs right now.
Any advice much appreciated.

There’s lots of information here that might help manage his expectations, and some coping strategies that might help MIL cope a little.
