What items in a Christmas Eve box for my baby nephew

We're spending Christmas with my parents, brother and SIL this year.

My son is three and I'd like to get him a Christmas Eve box this year containing some new pyjamas, a Christmas book and some chocolates. Maybe a little toy as well. We had the most rubbish Christmas ever last year as we found out I'd had a MMC over that week so I want to make this Christmas really special and happy.

I'd love to surprise my brother and SIL and do the same type of box for my little nephew who will be 6 months old at Christmas as I don't want to leave him out but...

What kind of things do you put in a Christmas Eve box for a baby? I can still do the book and pyjamas but can anyone think of anything else?

A "My First Christmas" outfit, tree decoration and a book.
That's it. All he needs.

Melty sticks / wafers and a teething toy

sorry for your loss

I'd check if they are planning on doing him a box themselves first - as they night want to be the ones to do those things for him.

Book, PJs and a teddy?

but you may want to float the idea past them because they may have their own idea.

I hope this doesn't sound mean, but it might be worth making discreet enquiries (maybe with your mum) to check if your brother or SIL are doing one themselves already. Our DGPs keep doing stuff that they assume we're not going to do for our own children... like Christmas stockings. It's really awkward.

cardibach · 13/11/2023 11:17

@Sirzy is right - mention it first because they may be doing it anyway!
If you do it, it doesn’t need to exactly match your son’s. He’s a baby.

TheBirdintheCave · 13/11/2023 11:19

Ooh yes I will get my mum to check beforehand :) It's not the sort of thing I think they'd think of doing though. My SIL is from an Indian background and her family have never done Christmas (though she enjoys celebrating it with us).

@TheBirdintheCave you could just give him those things anyway - you don't have to do a box.
Tbh more than one cute Christmas outfit is good (cos babies are grubby little things) so even if they get him one too it won't matter.
I do think it would be nice to give before actual Christmas day because then he can wear the outfits if visiting a grotto or whatever, tree decoration put on tree when the tree is put up etc.

My little ones also 6m at Christmas, I got her these super cute pjs from Tesco. So perhaps some nice Xmas pjs?

Thanks for the ideas so far guys! :D

@jumperooog Ohhh I love those. My son is actually obsessed with Peter Rabbit 😅

Get the kids matching pjs.
Christmas book
Christmas bib.

I would be careful over what traditions you start as these can often get out of hand and become a PITA in 10 years time when you have multiple kids. And they are hard to stop because kids expect it.

Potentially stepping all over their toes with this, definitely check beforehand. I'm sure SIL/BIL will want to be a festive outfit themselves.

A bath book perhaps?
