How much do you care about your appearance?

Like do you have a skincare routine? Pluck your eyebrows? Style your hair?

I think I’m medium. Sometimes I don’t bother doing anything with my hair and I’ll go weeks without doing my eyebrows. My nails are clean and short - whereas my friend gets hers done every 2 weeks.

Pre kids I was groomed to the max. Now I aim for clean hair and nails, a good skincare routine and light make up. Pedicures and eyebrow/lash treatments before a holiday but that's rare.

Strokethefurrywall · 12/11/2023 13:47

Day to day basis I'm below average in my grooming, I wear make up but my hair is always up in a topknot because I work out most days and don't have time to dry/style my hair.

Never bother with nails, have lost my big toenails from running etc. As long as they're clean and short.

My eyebrows are micro bladed though, my hair is keratined and I get Botox and juvederm. And on a night out get my hair and make up done professionally.

39and · 12/11/2023 13:49

I wouldn't say my grooming routine is that high maintenance but it's really important to me to look nice every day. Moisturiser, make up, clean brushed hair. I get my nails done with gel polish every month but like to keep them short and neat. I make an effort with my clothes.

I care about how I look but I don't get my nails or brows or anything done or wear lots of make up as I don't like that sort of a look. I like a natural, healthy look. I exercise and drink water and use moisturiser. Not looking like all done up does not mean you don't care about how you look.

ChannelNo19EDT · 12/11/2023 13:54

I like to wear flattering make up and clothes and hair but I'm not going to sink my savings in to plastic surgery (even though I might if I had more cash to spare).
I want to have security in my old age! More than I want to enhance my appearance to it's highest potential. I'll settle for looking healthy and OK.
For context,i'm single and accept that so it's not like I have to worry about a husband leaving me for somebody younger. Obviously here, clear, my concerns are around ageing. But it's going to happen whether somebody's watching or not!

So you don’t do anything with your brows?

Its crazy how much they change your face and make you look more polished when just plucked.

I do care about my hair lying nice, but I keep it short, so it's not really about 'styling' it.

I don't really have any additive/altering beauty rituals. I've never plucked my eyebrows or had fake/gel/etc nails put on top of mine. I keep my nails short to fairly short. I don't wear makeup.

I wear sunscreen or a moisturiser with sunscreen and I clean my face at night. I use a serum on it about 3-4 times a week and do a face mask about once a month, maybe twice if you include the wash-off types.

stayathomer · 12/11/2023 14:07

I seem to put everything into my skin, as in cleanse, moisturise, use spf, prime. It’s in great nick but hair is awful just really because of cost and a lot fell out from Covid. As a result I neglect it but when I look after it it looks shiny and glossy but with an awful colour and I tie it back as can’t afford to get it cut and when have gone to students to get it done it’s turned out awful because of the state it’s in!

Waitingfordoggo · 12/11/2023 14:13

I keep clean and wear clean clothes. Get hair cut and coloured twice a year, wash it once a week as it’s extremely dry and takes over a week to get greasy. Keep nails short and don’t paint them. Don’t wear make up unless I’m going somewhere smart (which is rare) and then I will wear mascara and maybe eyebrow make up. (Lipstick doesn’t suit me, I can’t do eyeshadow and foundation makes me look even older, so I don’t use those). I don’t have facials or treatments but I love a sports massage! Use a facial shaver thingy to tidy up eyebrows and remove chin hairs. I also use 3 or 4 skincare products. Basically I keep things cheap and easy for myself and I’m happy with that.

Baffledandalarmed · 12/11/2023 14:19

I make an effort when I need to. I have incredibly expensive work outfits for when I go into the office as my job is v. External facing. I wear makeup etc. But, that’s why I don’t make an effort when I don’t need to (and grunge around in the countryside on muddy dog walks wearing ten year old jumpers with holes in).

I have better things to do with my time than pluck myself. BUT equally I am always presentable enough underneath (eyebrows done [do them myself], legs shaved etc) that if I need to get smart quickly I can.

Realistically though, if I didn’t have to go into the office I’d probably just shave my legs.

DelphiniumBlue · 12/11/2023 14:22

I tend to go for a fairly natural look, and use a BB cream, blusher, sometimes eyeliner and highlighter and always eyebrow pencil. I dye my eyelashes and brows myself every 3 or 4 weeks, and get my brows threaded when I can get somewhere that does that at a reasonable price. I sometimes wear nail polish that I apply myself, but never leave it on chipped. I have a very basic cleansing and moisturising routine, avoid sun on my face and have never had a facial or other treatment.
I'm early 60's, my skin is great, as is my Mum's.. she only ever uses Oil of Olay, so I guess it's genetic. I got my make up routine from my granny, I shared a bedroom with her on holiday one year and watched the transformation from tired older lady to glowing and glamorous. It's the blusher and eyebrows that make the difference!

casuarinatree · 12/11/2023 14:24

I spend a lot of time (and money) on my skin and really love skincare. I get my eyebrows threaded every 4 weeks as well. I get my hair highlighted and cut regularly as well.

But day to day I don't spend that much time on my appearance - I usually have my hair in a ponytail or bun. I wear very minimal make up (tinted moisturiser, mascara and eyebrow gel). I love clothes but I am not fashionable.

I'm not especially good looking (and take a terrible photo - I'm incredibly unphotogenic) and carrying some extra weight, so whilst I refuse to let myself go, I also rarely go all out dressing up and with make up as I feel a bit ridiculous.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/11/2023 14:27

I'm always clean and tidy, use moisturiser and a swipe of lipstick
I do pluck my eyebrows
That's it

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/11/2023 14:28

Also haircut and colour every 6 weeks as I have a soft short pixie cut

Dacadactyl · 12/11/2023 14:29

I pluck my eyebrows and my skincare routine is a bit of cheap moisturiser in the morning. I'll wear make up if I'm going to work, but not otherwise.

At the minute I'm in scruffy clothes and hair is scraggy up. I've not had a shower today either. I'd go out to the shops and to visit in laws like this (and intend to shortly), but wouldn't go to the pub.

kitsuneghost · 12/11/2023 14:34

I have a skincare routine but don't do make up or dress up. I have a profession that doesn't require it.

PermanentTemporary · 12/11/2023 14:35

I do, though I'm sure nobody would believe it 😆

I spend quite a lot on getting my hair cut 4x a year and coloured 2x a year. I get salon waxing every 6 weeks which costs a lot. And I pay for gym membership - desperately trying get to get fit again which makes more difference than anything else.

I use a supermarket day and night cream and don't wear makeup. Never do nails as I dont like the look on my hands, but occasional pedicure (like once every 5 years).

I agree that brows make a huge difference too but I'm cautious about getting anyone else involved. I've seen too many versions I think have gone fractionally too far, and being an 80s kid I quite like a more natural brow.

suntannedsnowballs · 12/11/2023 14:48

Hair washed and blow-dryed every day, regularly coloured

Eyebrows microbladed

Wear minimal makeup day to day but put fake tan drops in my moisturiser - eyeliner and eyebrows brushed

I get Botox quarterly

Gel polish always

Jeans and jumper at this time of year but I work outside so aim for warmth above style Grin

I'm 33 and don't count the above as making an effort, it's just basic for me. Making an effort for me is a full face of makeup, the nice clothes and hair curled/styled differently to my day to day

SallyWD · 12/11/2023 14:51

I'm medium too. I definitely like to look presentable (well I want to look nice) but I'm very low maintenance. Wear minimal make up (foundation and eyeliner, occasionally lip gloss), low maintenence haircut, don't style my hair, don't have a skincare routine. I just wash my face with soap in the shower. Live in jeans and a top

Girasoli · 12/11/2023 14:52

Pretty low maintenance, I don't get my nails done and I cut my own hair. I do pluck my eyebrows though and stick a but of mascara and lip balm on. I just wash my face with water/in the shower.

In the winter I like tights or leggings with dresses more than jeans so it probably looks like I have made an effort but really it's just that I find tights/leggings warmer and comfier.

goldengirlx · 12/11/2023 14:56

I look after myself well.

I thread my own eyebrows and i have a lash lift and tint every 6 weeks. I have curly hair just past my back but cut it myself, scared of hairdressers! I oil it once a week and once my hairs washed i just put some anti frizz stuff and it air dries nicely. I have my nails and feet done every 3 weeks. Go to a dental hyigeniest every 6 months, teeth too sensitive to be whitened. Thats pretty basic i feel.

I have never coloured my hair or had any fillers / botox. Probably will in the future but im 35 atm so no need.

I do take my son for a haircut every sunday, he has a skinfade and i like him to look fresh all the time. He's getting to the age where he has blackheads so they apply a mask to his nose to draw them out. Ive always been told he looks clean and well looked after.

I think its important to look clean above anything else. I dont think i look special but i know i look well groomed and clean. Im the most low maintenance out of all my friends, who all have regular hair colouring, lash extensions, fillers, hair extensions, blow dries, had teeth done. My lash tint and lift lets me get away with no mascara and i dont put any make up on my skin unless im going out with people.

goldengirlx · 12/11/2023 14:57

Oh and i have a laser hair removal machine which was my biggest game changer!

Dontcallmescarface · 12/11/2023 14:58

I don't style my hair...no point as it's so thick I can just about get a brush through it
Don't do my nails as they are thick so the less attention they get, the better

Don't pluck my eyebrows as it just highlights the scarring above both eyes.

Spirro · 12/11/2023 14:58

Nobody cares what I look like, so why would I care?

I put sunscreen on for health reasons and I moisturise so my skin doesn’t feel itchy and tight. That’s about it.

ALunchbox · 12/11/2023 14:58

I exercise regularly as I feel it really helps my posture. I eat healthily too.
I moisturise twice daily too.
Other than this, no make up and I get my husband or DC to cut my hair.
