My 18 month old seems to have picked up HFAM.

He's seems ok and is eating well enough. Do I need to do anything?

I haven't taken him to the doctors, I've just looked online. Does anyone have any experience with it?

Our son had it years ago and was just a bit miserable, DH then caught it and felt really rough
Not a lot you can do really as far as I remember

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 12/11/2023 13:17

There’s nothing to be done, just let it pass and give Calpol if needed. It’s a good sign if he’s still interested in food - often their mouths are too sore.

Cindy1802 · 12/11/2023 13:18

Nope, sounds like he's coping quite well. Just keep an eye.

My little boy got it a few months before turning 2 - he passed it on to my husband like PP and my husband was sooo miserable with it 🙈 make sure you wash your hands extra well after nappy changes etc as apparently its passed on quite easily through dirty nappies.

Yeah it's very contagious apparently. When ds had it he had a bit of a bad belly but he wasn't too bad otherwise, just lots of sore spots/blisters
We was in Mexico at the time and the doctors there gave us all sorts of stuff to help soothe the itching including ibuprofen for any inflammation

gentlemum · 12/11/2023 13:21

My son's had it twice. Second time was much more mild but first time was awful and I got it too and was so ill! We used calpol and calamine lotion for the spots but really you just have to ride it out. Hope it's not too bad for you! X

FedUpOfInstaMum · 12/11/2023 13:26

He's doesn't have a many spots at all on his hands or mouth. Nothing on his feet and it hasn't spread to anyone else as of yet. He has a few spots around his private parts though.

There is more than one virus responsible for the set of symptoms known as HFM.
Dd2 recently had it (her whole class did). It was a mild version, mild temp, a few spots on the legs, sore throat for about a week. Gave calpol fir the throat and that was all that was needed.
Dd1 got it years ago. Hight temp, wouldn't eat, spots all over her arms and legs. Better after 3-4 days. That one I caught, and was miserably ill for 10 days. On 2 fingers the spots were so dense that the entire top layer of skin died and peeled off, and the the itching was unbelievable.
So play it by ear really.

gentlemum · 12/11/2023 13:36

@FedUpOfInstaMum are you sure it's hand foot and mouth?

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 12/11/2023 13:36

I feel like we've had HFMD more than a cold these past 2 years.

For my son who got it really bad for about 2 weeks, we had to stagger calpol and ibuprofen some days, and ice lollies and ice-cream were his go to foods and that's if he could be bothered to eat. He did have a fever that seemed to not want to go, but did subside with calpol, and we do have some difflam spray which made not a single jot of difference really.

For me, I didn't realise I had it until I decided to have a shot of rum and suddenly my entire face felt like it was on fire, when I looked in a mirror my mouth was all covered in sores. It only lasted a few days for me though, perhaps if was the rum 😂

But whenever it's going about you can guarantee it will make its way to this house.

We don't bother getting a doctor to confirm it because it's so characteristically obvious when you've got sores and blisters on your hands feet and mouth.

You just have to ride it out.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 12/11/2023 13:37

Chicken pox started around the private parts for us, and up the back, then face arms and legs. Are you positive it's HFMD?

Not entirely. I thought it was chicken pox at first but it's not spreading like chicken pox does.

@FedUpOfInstaMum it's so hard to tell for certain what things are. But I would wonder if there are no spots on the hands feet or mouth and he's eating well (which normally they don't because of the mouth ulcers) then it doesn't sound that characteristic of HFM.

FedUpOfInstaMum · 13/11/2023 08:38

I'm quite sure it is HFM now, but it's very mild. He's had it since Thursday now and the pictures were taken this morning. He seems ok though. Slept well last night and is lively enough.

Ah yes, that does look like it now. I really wouldn't worry though, it's very mild and the main thing is if he feels ok in himself and is eating well so you don't really need to do anything but wait for it to pass x
