Styles of year 6 prom dress

Hello,

can anyone recommend anywhere to get year 6 prom dresses and give me an idea of what sort of style they are? Are they the grown up formal styles that are favoured by the year 11s or more of a kids formal party dress?

my daughter is on the “larger size” (12/14 age clothes) but hasn’t got the height

Very self conscious at 36” chest/waist/hips and has many a melt down trying on clothes so I don’t want to chance online places that run small (ie shein) as I’ll need a reputable returns policy if Doesn’t fit/she doesn’t feel confident

any pointers/suggestions? I’ve looked at monsoon but according to their size charts you have an hourglass figure at age 13 🙄

I would check with the other girls' parents first. In some schools they'll wear more grown up styles. In others more child like ones.

This is tricky. At DDS "prom" 🙄 some of them were glammed up like 18 year olds, had had hair and nails done, the whole bit. DD just wasn't and still isn't at all into that and wore trousers and sparkly top. What does your daughter like and feel confident in? Id use that as your main deciding factor.
In terms of practical suggestions I guess Monsoon would be the obvious one but loads of places will have party wear at this time of year.

Talk to parents with older children who were in year 6. Or better still, opt out of proms, donate some money to charity instead.

Year 6 prom?? What is this silliness? Why are adults encouraging this?

My DD is in year 6 and their end of year 6 celebrations are a day at the beach and a trip to a theme park , they are planning on paying for this with fundraising events through the year. 10/11 year olds do not need proms !!

It’s depends so much from one school to the next, and also year to year.

It’s in the summer, so likely warm. A nice party dress would be a good start.

As to your point re Monsoon, I was definitely an hourglass by 13, as was my DD. Your DD may well be too, when she outgrows her little girl body.

This sounds v OTT for year 6. My DCs had a leaving party and the girls were in a mix of age-appropriate party dresses, jumpsuits and jeans and tee-shirts!

I know. I’m just flabbergasted myself. If I had my way schools would/should organise a Leavers disco with a small contribution from parents to cover costs and take all the pressure off I think it’s bloody mental

Blimey, I’m glad the year 6s at my school don’t have a prom.

They get an evening disco/barbecue and an afternoon picnic on our field with their parents.

So much less faff.

Just to clear up any confusion it’s the kids that want to call it a prom, that want to dress up and feel special because a lot of them have seen older siblings and cousins go through it. The mums don’t give a rats arse but they do want their kids to be happy and have a good time so if they want to call it a “prom” they can have a “prom”

Kinda weird that some of you are so sad and bored that you will literally log onto a forum for no other reason than to try and put people down but if you wanna carry slagging off a bunch of ten year olds, knock yourselves out.

I think Monsoon is really old fashioned. Look at other stores, even next has some lovely clothes. Depends on your budget?

My DDs school has a "prom"... it is just a fancy name for a Leavers Disco! The girls outfits ranged from summer dresses to sequiny things to party dresses to a bit bridesmaidy, and fancy trousers... biys were generally in jeans or trousers and a shirt or polo. The odd tie but it was the 2022 heatwave peak!

First of all, many children’s parents will not be able to fork out money for things like prom dresses / hair stylists / make up and fake tans/nails. It’s sexualising young girls. If you can’t see that then shame on you.

See if you can find pictures from last year's prom.

I would probably look at the teen section in River Island, New Look or H&M for a party dress.

Nobody is slagging off the kids.

If they want to call it a prom they can call it a prom but surely you, as the adult, recognise that it's just a school disco and you don't need to tie yourself up in knots over what they wear?!

OP - my daughter’s leavers party (which they called a prom too, bcos that made them feel special & grown up) was a really big deal to her & I’m sure it is to your daughter too. I think it’s lovely & right that you’re supporting her to find something she will feel happy & confident in.
